Originally called Jackson's Hole by mountain men, Jackson Hole is located in the valley between the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges. The term "hole" was used by early trappers as a term for low-lying valleys that were surrounded by mountains and contained ample rivers and streams that provided the perfect habitat for beavers and other fur-bearing animals. Both Jackson's Hole and the nearby town of Jackson were named after David Edward "Davy" Jackson, who trapped beaver in the area in the late 1820s and was one of the first European-Americans to spend an entire winter in the valley. The valley where Jackson Hole is located is 55 miles long by 6-to-13 miles wide, with an average elevation of 6,800 feet. Its lowest point, located near the southern boundary, is 6,350 feet.
