Bear Lake State Park features a gorgeous blue lake in a high-altitude setting and is in northern Utah, near the Idaho border. Bear Lake was initially formed due to seismic activity roughly 30,000 years ago. Scottish-Canadian explorer and fur trader Donald McKenzie came through the region in 1819 and named the body of water Black Bear Lake, later shortened to Bear Lake. Bear Lake became a state park in 1962 and offers swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing, and many other activities. The lake's brilliant color comes from the calcium carbonate minerals that reflect sunlight up to the surface. What to Do at
Bear Lake State Park
The park has three main sections, each offering different activities. The Marina section, open year-round, provides boat-launch access to the lake. Rendezvous Beach, open from late April to late October, features several campgrounds and a day-use beach area. The Eastside section has more campgrounds and provides additional boat launches for small watercraft. Water-based activities in the park include rafting, kayaking, and fishing, and you can rent a boat or a Sea-Doo to enjoy the lake. In the winter, you can go ice fishing at Cisco Beach or rent a Ski-Doo for snowmobiling.
Inside Bear Lake State Park
Bear Lake is called the Caribbean of the Rockies because of its unique water color, and you can relax and play on the white sand beaches. You can also rent fishing boats, skiing equipment, and camping supplies from park vendors. If you love going scuba diving, search for the location north of the marina where numerous old cars are buried in the water. At the marina, you can get camping supplies, fill your boat up with gas while on the water, and get friendly advice. You won't want to miss the Bonneville Cisco net fishing in January or other fishing opportunities at this park. Parts of this park are groomed in the winter for snowmobilers.
Fishing
You can fish from a boat on the lake, but you can also fish from the shore in the Marina section as well as at Cisco Beach. You can catch lake trout, Bonneville cisco, and cutthroat trout.
Geocaching
There is a geocache near Bear Lake. Once you find the container, you can take a prize, but remember to bring a family-friendly item to replace it with.
Nature Watching
Bird-watchers can add entries to their birding journals at the park. You will likely see sandhill cranes, white pelicans, and other waterfowl. While exploring the trails, you may spot bears, deer, and a variety of smaller mammals.
Hiking
At nearly five miles long, the Bear Lake Trail on the lake's western shore is a paved route with endless water views. It is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
Boating
With its length of 20 miles, width of eight miles, and numerous launches, Bear Lake is a boater's paradise. The Marina section has 361 boat slips, some with water and power hookups.
Swimming
Rendezvous Beach is the main swimming area at the park. There are restrooms and picnic tables nearby.
How to Get to
Bear Lake State Park
From Logan, UT, you can head to the park's main office to plan out your visit. Take US-89 east out of Logan for 38.7 miles. Make a left onto N 300 Paradise Pkwy and go for 0.8 miles. Make a left onto Bear Lake Blvd and continue into the park.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bear Lake State Park
Many people visit the park when the water temperature reaches a comfortable 70 degrees. However, if you love winter sports, you can snowmobile, ice fish, and snowshoe during the colder months.
While visiting the park, you may see bears, deer, and smaller critters like squirrels and chipmunks. You can also spot birds such as herons, egrets, geese, and ducks.
The different sections of the park have their own campgrounds with varying amenities ranging from full hookups to primitive, tent-only spots. Check the park's official website for campground information.
You can make a reservation for a campsite at the South Eden campground, and there is no fee to reserve a spot. All other campgrounds are first-come, first-served.
You can bring your dog with you to the park. Just note that you must keep your pup on a leash with a length of no more than six feet at all times, and you are expected to clean up after them.
