Established in 1917, the city was named after the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which purchased 16,000 acres of land in order to grow cotton for use in its tires. Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area: Although the recreation area has only existed as a state park since 1994, the region’s name dates back to 1885 when Thomas Jefferson Adair moved to the area to farm the land, prompting the locals to joke that only a fool would try to farm the soil in the hollow.
St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church in Phoenix is one of the largest shrines in North America. It is dedicated to St. Sharbel Maklouf, a Lebanese hermit and monk widely known as the Healing Saint. The shrine is visited each year by thousands who come to pray.
Dobbins Lookout is a historic structure that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.
