Globe, Arizona is an example of an authentic western town. Founded as a mining town in 1876, Globe has a colorful history. Local legends claim that the town got its name from a large, globe-shaped nugget of silver found in the area. While the silver content in the surrounding hills was minimal, millions of tons of copper have been produced in the area in the past 100 years. The Old Dominion Historic Mine Park offers a glimpse at the history of mining in the area.

Globe's location at the foot of the Pinal Mountains not only presented multiple mining opportunities but also an ample water supply. Water and rangeland provided other economic opportunities. Ranchers discovered that cattle thrived in the cool climate at 3,000 to 5,000-foot altitudes. The wealth from mining and the cowboys' raucous lifestyle contributed to Globe's wild west attitude. Pinal Mountain, just south of Globe, is part of the Tonto National Forest. Hikers, bikers, and nature buffs can enjoy the trails and campgrounds in the area.

Globe is the county seat of Gila County. The county is an ideal location to explore Arizona's history. Gila County has 50 registered historic places. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes 16 places of national significance and 18 of statewide significance. There are also several historically significant Native American sites in the county. The Besh Ba Gowah ruins are located in town and open to the public.

Modern-day Globe is still a ranching community. One of the few operating copper smelters in America is nearby in Miami, Arizona. Globe is located midway between two major population centers. Tucson is about a 100-mile drive south, and Phoenix is about 80 miles to the west. The mountains, lakes, national parks, and forests that surround the town make Globe an ideal location to experience the nature and history of the American Southwest. Globe is a quiet jumping-off spot to explore all of Arizona.
