Deer River is located in the northern part of Minnesota and is fondly known as the gateway to the Chippewa National Forest. The township of Deer River was officially organized in February of 1894, and within a couple of years, many settlers had moved to the area, and the Duluth, Superior and Western Railway had reached the settlement. By 1898, the village had been officially incorporated and logging was by far its largest industry. 

These days, the small town of only around 1,000 people is most known for hosting the world's largest wild rice festival. The town's remote location makes it somewhat of a paradise for the adventurous, outdoorsy types as it is surrounded by more than 1 million acres of forests, 1,300 lakes, and 923 miles of rivers and streams. Deer River offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking, biking, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Deer River also offers plenty of shopping, cultural opportunities, dining, and attractions. Visitors can learn about local Native American heritage at the White Oak Learning Center, and anyone looking for a nightlife experience can check out the White Oak Casino. • Deer River Wild Rice Festival - The annual Deer River Wild Rice Festival is the largest wild rice festival in the world and has been celebrated in the town for over 70 years. The community will come together for this event of fun, food, entertainment, and fellowship in the second week of July.

• Deer River BBQ & Brew Fest - Another fun summer event in Deer River is the BBQ & Brew Fest, which the town's chamber of commerce puts together on the third Saturday in July each year. The event consists of just what you'd expect: lots of barbecue and brews. The festival takes place at Deer River Wayside Park.
