In 1841, a fur trading post was built and managed by a man named Louis B. Chartran, whom the town of Chadron is named after. In the 1870s, a woman homesteader by the name of Fannie O'Linn saw the growing need for food in the region and established farms in the area. By 1884, the population of the city had grown to 500 people. Chadron is now home to roughly 6,000 people. In 1910, Chadron was selected as a site for a college by the Nebraska Legislature, and in the summer of the following year, the first sessions were held.
Chadron is close to the Oglala National Grassland as well as the Nebraska National Forest. You can also visit the Eleanor Barbour Cook Museum of Geology, which is at the campus of Chadron State College. It houses an impressive collection of fossils, minerals and rocks from Nebraska and around the world.
