Canton, Georgia is the county seat of Cherokee County and as of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 32,973. Canton is located just north of Atlanta, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Farmers initially settled in the area in 1833, and a small village called Grassy Valley sprung up. In 1834, the town was renamed Canton after its similarity to China's city of Guangzhou. It was made the county seat of Cherokee County, which was created from parts of Forsyth County, Georgia, and Dekalb County. A courthouse was built soon afterward, and Grassy Valley became Canton's first business district.
