One of the first settlers of Baytown was Nathaniel Lynch. He arrived in 1822 and set up a ferry crossing service at the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou junction. The service still operates today and is known as the Lynchburg Ferry. Board the ferry service there when you tour the area.

Goose Creek, Pelly, and East Baytown cities grew around Baytown as time passed. Residents of the three areas began talks after World War I to merge them with Baytown, which happened in 1947. 

The discovery of oil in the region led to significant growth. The Humble Oil and Refining Company, which opened in 1916 and mainly operated in Goose Field, expanded its activities to the entire Baytown area. It opened its first offshore drilling operation in Texas. The company also developed the Baytown Refinery, followed by many other refineries in the area. Besides oil refining, Baytown also had other thriving industries, including steel manufacturing and agriculture. 

Today, Baytown is a growing city with a population of over 76,000. The area has many attractions, including the San Jacinto Museum of History, Pirates Bay Waterpark, and Baytown Nature Center. The city also has some of the best restaurants, shopping centers, and entertainment venues in the area.
