Explore Avon, North Carolina, in an RVshare RV Rental
Avon, North Carolina, is a small Outer Banks village that was once known as Kinnakeet. The earliest inhabitants of the area were the people of the Hatteras tribe. During the precolonial era, the area was popular with shipbuilders and mariners. However, after only a few years of commercial foresting, the island was purged of nearly all its trees.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, two U.S. Lifesaving Stations were erected in Avon. One of them, the Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station, has been restored and is now considered a historic part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The remote village is only home to around 400 residents. Thanks to the thriving tourist industry, there are over a dozen restaurants, a grocery store, and a medical center. The Avon Fishing Pier and other seaside amenities make it one of the most popular destinations in the Outer Banks. Most visitors don’t want to miss the opportunity to drop a line off the local fishing pier.
If you’re craving even more intensive water recreation, there are plenty of local fishing charters and watersport rentals. If you're not lucky enough to snag a catch, you can find plenty of well-prepared local seafood at the local eateries. While the town of Avon offers plenty of temptations, it's typically the Atlantic Ocean that beckons visitors. Sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, paddleboarding, and surfing opportunities abound.
