Ohio was admitted as a state of the United States in 1803. Several years later, in 1815, Ashland was laid out under the name Uniontown. This was soon changed when locals determined Ohio already had a city under that name. The new name Ashland was chosen in support of Henry Clay, a congressman from Kentucky. In 1822, the city had only 20 or so log huts. After two decades, the population expanded dramatically to 1,300. Ashland College, a private Christian university, opened in 1878.
Manufacturing became essential to the city's growth in the late 1800s. Businesses started selling farming equipment, military supplies, disinfectants, and various rubber products. The Eagle Rubber Company began in 1913 after Harry Ross Gill determined how to make cigar-shaped balloons. This led to Ashland being known as "The Balloon Capital of the World." Notable people from this area include astronaut Robert C. Springer and college basketball coach Eric Musselman.
Ashland has five parks, with four of them connected by the Town Run stream. The city hit its population peak in 2000 and currently sits at about 20,000 people. Cleveland is 66 miles northwest while Columbus is 82 miles south. Ashland is in a great location near Charles Mills Lake, a hotspot for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping.
