With a population of 200,393, Amarillo, Texas is just the 14th largest city in Texas by population but the largest in the Texas Panhandle. Historically, Amarillo was a ranching community with many large ranches in the area, including the JA Ranch that still exists today. There are many different museums to enjoy in Amarillo for people who want to get a better understanding of the city’s history. People who love RVs should stop into the Sisemore Traveland RV Museum to see many displays showcasing the history of RVs and the many different models that have existed throughout the years. Located near the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, the Texas Air and Space Museum has many displays featuring civilian and military aircraft as well as a wide variety of displays featuring air and space artifacts. 

Campers who wish to experience the nature around Amarillo will find many different natural adventures. The Amarillo Botanical Gardens feature 4 acres of seasonal gardens showcasing the natural flora of the area and an indoor tropical conservatory. State Parks Near Amarillo, Texas

The main attraction of the Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the canyon system located in the Texas Panhandle. The Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the United States with a length of 120 miles and an average width of six miles. The canyon’s depth varies from 820 feet to 1,000 feet. Campers who wish to enjoy this park will find 16 trails that can be used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park features many campsites for RV campers. Located on the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado, Caprock Canyons State Park is approximately 100 miles southeast of Amarillo. The Bottomless Lakes State Park is nestled along the Pecos River in New Mexico and is named after the nine deep lakes within the park. National Sites Near Amarillo, Texas

Located 150 miles west of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site protects the site where the Battle of Washita occurred in 1868 between George Custer’s 7th U.S. Cavalry and the Cheyenne. The area features a 315-acre memorial commemorating those lost in the battle as well as exhibits about the battle and its participants. The Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is located just 30 miles north of Amarillo, making it a great choice for people wishing to camp near the city. The main attraction of this state park is Lake Meredith. Lake Meredith is a reservoir created by the Canadian River’s Sanford Dam. Fishing and boating are popular activities within this recreation area. Campers who wish to enjoy this lake will find a variety of environments to stay in, including beautiful shoreline sites, scenic overlooks, and wooded campgrounds. The Sanford-Yake campground has 10 RV sites with full hookups that can be reserved for a fee. All other campsites within the park are free and require no reservation. 

Situated next to the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument. This national monument celebrates the history of the flint that can be found in the region, flint that was distributed all throughout the Great Plains by Native Americans trading the beautiful, rainbow-hued mineral. Visitors who wish to learn all about this site’s history can take a guided tour with one of the park’s rangers. The Alibates Museum has many different interactive exhibits to explore. This site is also famous for the many different petroglyphs etched into stones around the park that date back hundreds of years. Unfortunately, there is no camping within this site. Campers wishing to visit will find many amenities at the nearby Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. 

National Forests Near Amarillo, Texas

Covering over 1.6 million acres, the Cibola National Forest is the name given to many disjointed forests spread across New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. One of the major draws to this national forest is the “sky islands” region that houses several hundred rare plant and animal species. There are many different recreational activities for visitors of the forest to partake in, such as backpacking, skiing, hiking, and camping. The Lake McClellan Campground is a great place for RV campers to stay. People searching for a more rustic experience can stay in any of the developed recreation sites in the forest when the weather permits. 

Located 50 miles north of Houston, Texas, the Sam Houston National Forest is great for fishing and camping. Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe are both popular destinations for fishing and are renowned for their black bass populations. These two lakes provide the open water needed for sailing, making them a great destination for boaters. The Sam Houston National Forest contains three developed campgrounds that are perfect for RV camping. 

The Angelina National Forest is located in the piney woods region of East Texas. It lies on the south and north shores of Sam Rayburn Reservoir within the Niches River Basin.
