Caprock Canyons State Park is located in Northwestern Texas and is situated between Lubbock to the south and Amarillo to the north. It is close to historic Route 66 and is near major thoroughfares traveling west to Albuquerque, Phoenix, the Grand Canyon and California. Caprock Canyons is a popular state park to visit and is home to interesting canyons, gullies, rocky formations and cliffs. The weather is hot and dry in the summer but can have cool evenings. The winters are fairly cold but not extremely so.

Palo Duro Rim RV Campground is located directly on the rim of the Palo Duro Canyon and right next to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. The park is quiet and away from city lights, and there are plenty of activities for a family to enjoy there, like two zip lines and a rappelling adventure site. You can also easily access the many walking trails throughout the canyon. The campground is flat and easy to get to, and the views of the canyon are stunning.

Inside Caprock Canyons State Park
Caprock Canyons State Park is host to a wide variety of wildlife, including a Texas bison herd. There are bats, eagles, prairie dogs, and many varieties of birds. Theo Lake offers plenty of fishing, swimming, and no-wake boating activities. You will appreciate the 90 miles of hiking trails that range in length and difficulty. The easy Mesa Trail is only 1 mile, and the Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail is a moderate 6.3-mile hike that rewards you with a gorgeous waterfall. You can ride horses around the park and even camp at equestrian campsites that have corrals.

Caprock Canyons State Park
Caprock Canyons State Park is located on FM 1065 and is 3.5 miles north of State Highway 86 in Quitaque. From Highway 86 in Quitaque, turn right (north) onto FM 1065.

The best time to visit Caprock Canyons State Park is in spring and fall. The weather is glorious for long hikes, and the park is filled with spring flowers and beautiful fall foliage.
The park is known for its bison and Mexican free-tailed bats. However, mules, deer, bobcats, and coyotes roam the park. In addition, smaller animals, including jackrabbits, grey foxes, and raccoons, call the park home.
Caprock Canyons State Park has 44 sites suitable for RV camping: 10 sites have 50 amp electric hookups, 25 have 30 amp, and nine have only water. Camping site amenities include a fire ring, shade shelter, and lantern post.
Reservations are recommended as sites fill up quickly and can be made five months in advance. Campers can make reservations by phone and online. There is no reservation fee, but there are fees for changes and cancelations.
Pets must be on a leash or contained at all times. Dogs can not be left alone, and owners must have proof of current rabies vaccination. In addition, park officials will ask pets that are loud or disturbing others to leave.
