Camp Nelson National Monument

During the Civil War, Camp Nelson in Jessamine County, KY, was used as a supply depot and hospital. It also became a recruitment and training center for African American soldiers. Camp Nelson was a refugee camp for their children and wives throughout the years. Many enslaved people came to this location to secure their freedom. For that reason, this national monument also played an instrumental role in the dissolution of slavery.
