Camp Nelson National Monument is a perfect place for Civil War buffs. You should check out the visitor center and museum to get a sense of the camp's history. • Fort Putnam Loop

  This trail travels through the woods to Fort Jones and the Stone Fort. Fort Jones is the best-preserved Civil War fort in Kentucky. The Stone Fort overlooks the Hickman Creek Valley and the Hickman Creek Nature Center.

• Hickman Creek

  This tributary of the Kentucky River flows through Jessamine County. It is part of the Mississippi River watershed. The creek is one of the best smallmouth bass streams in the state.

How To Get To Camp Nelson National Monument

Camp Nelson National Monument is located on U.S. 27 about 20 miles south of Lexington. From Lexington, head northwest on U.S. 60 toward U.S. 25. You'll need to take a left on the ramp for KY 4. Keep straight on the road for 4 miles. At exit 2, take the ramp and turn right for U.S. 68. Follow the road for another 8 miles, and turn left on KY 169. From here, you want to follow the road for 2.5 miles and turn right onto U.S. 27. Keep following the signs into the park.
