Why We Love Travel

Suggest a Local Tip

From meeting new people to experiencing new sights, sounds, and smells – is there anything more exciting or rejuvenating than a break from the day-to-day mundanity? Traveling is an excellent way to immerse yourself in a new culture, setting, or way-of-life, but the best part is this: you don’t have to venture far from home to enjoy what this world has to offer.

Whether your journey takes you across your own city, to an unexplored part of your state, or even to the other side of the world, there’s no doubt you will still learn a lot about your surroundings – and yourself – along the way.

Benefits of Traveling Locally

While the culture an hour away from your home might not be drastically different from what you’re used to, you can still gain a deepened sense of appreciation for where you’ve laid your roots. Plus, traveling locally has a lot of benefits:

More cost-effective. Local travel is certainly a budget-friendly way to explore! Many activities and parks are free or have a low cost of entry. For day trips, you can also pack your own meals to save.

leaf-solid

Eco-friendly way to travel. Travel is hard on the environment, but putzing around your area is more sustainable than air travel.

Shape

Quick trips. Getting out locally means you can do it more often! Long weekend trips are a lot easier to take when the destination is a short drive away.

map-solid

Easy to plan. Preparing your itinerary for a local getaway will likely save you some time and stress.

key-solid

More convenient. Especially if you have little ones, sticking close to home may be much more convenient than far-off destinations. If you forget something, have an emergency, or need to cut the trip short, being closeby definitely has its benefits.

Parks in Arroyo Grande, California

Morro Bay State Park

Tucked as it is alongside the south-central California coast. Arroyo Grande is lucky to be close to a wide range of beautiful state and national parks and recreation areas. Here are just a few of the best outdoor places to play in this part of CA.

Lopez Lake State Recreation Area

Offering 22 miles of stunning shoreline along its namesake reservoir, Lopez Lake State Recreation Area is a popular destination for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, picnicking, and camping — not least because its climate is pretty close to ideal year-round. After enjoying time on its shimmering blue waters, take to the beautiful oak-covered hillsides that surround the lake.

Montaña de Oro State Park

Literally meaning “mountain of gold,” you might be surprised to learn that Montaña de Oro State Park’s name comes not from a gilded peak, but from the beautiful yellow wildflowers that spring up in this area each spring. With 8,000 acres of dramatic cliffs, many of which are pummelled daily by the Pacific Ocean, and seven miles of sandy shoreline, this park offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities for hikers, bikers, equestrians, kite-flyers and more.

Morro Bay State Park

With a lagoon as well as a bay (and also the fascinating Morro Rock, a volcanic peak that rises from the middle of the bay’s waters), Morro Bay State Park is truly a one-of-a-kind wild space. Although commonly sought out by sailors and fisherfolk, this park is also friendly to landlubbers, thanks to its network of hiking trails and on-site golf course and museum.

Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve

Step into the Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve, and you’ll feel like you’ve magically flown to another planet. The endless sand dunes that make up this unique wilderness constitute one of the largest coastal dune fields left in the state. ATVing and sand-buggy rides are popular activities, though some take to the dunes more directly — with a snowboard (or sand board, in this case). Camping is permitted on the beach and in the open dune area, and the park also offers plenty of beautiful waterfront.

Hiking in Arroyo Grande, California

You don’t have to get very far from town at all to enjoy some incredible natural spaces. Here are a few of the best hiking trails in and around Arroyo Grande, whether you’re after a quick and easy stroll or something more challenging.

Clover Ridge Trail

Just one mile in length and seeing about 100 feet in elevation change, Clover Ridge Trail is a great short-but-brisk option for beginning hikers and those looking for something quick and easy. Following a worn, dirt path amidst characteristic local flora, this trail is also home to some neat little art installations put in by past visitors!

Marina and Rocky Point Trails

Running just over two and a half miles and seeing a little bit more than 250 feet in elevation gain along the way, combining the Marina and Rocky Point Trails is a great way to see a beautiful stretch of the California countryside surrounding Arroyo Grande — while still staying in the easy-to-moderate hiking category. Renowned for its waterside views and oak trees draped with Spanish moss, this trail is also dog-friendly so long as Fido stays on his leash.

Turkey Ridge, Blueberry Springs, and Blackberry Springs Trails

Although its name looks like a mouthful, the popular trek combining the Turkey Ridge, Blueberry Springs, and Blackberry Springs Trails actually only runs about a mile and a half altogether — though you’ll see more than 500 feet in elevation gain during that time, so you’ll definitely feel your heart rate increase. Beautiful mountainside views make for a great background for hiking as well as trail running, for those looking to kick it up a notch.

Big Falls Trail

Tucked into the nearby Santa Lucia Wilderness, Big Falls Trail sees about 1,100 feet of elevation gain along its four-and-a-half mile length, putting it into the moderately challenging category even for hikers with quite a few miles under their belts. But the workout is definitely worth it: as its name suggests, this trail winds past some stunning waterfalls as well as displaying beautiful California hillsides.

High Ridge Trail Loop

Clocking in at more than 1,000 feet in elevation gain along its four-and-a-half-mile length, High Ridge Loop Trail is a moderately challenging hike that rewards trekkers with sweeping views of the surrounding valley. This trail is also popular among backcountry campers, and is another dog friendly option for those hiking with four-legged friends.

Villa Cantina

It’s California, which means Mexican food is pretty much perpetually on the menu… but if you want the best Mexican Arroyo Grande has to offer, head to Villa Cantina. This Mexican American grill serves up all your favorites in generous serving sizes, accompanied with some delicious and inventive cocktails to wash it all down with. Burgers are also available if you’re in the mood for a U.S. classic!

Specializing in these cooked-on-the-spot delicacies, and offering a range of specials such as the Bianca (a white pie topped with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, garlic, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, and basil), this Italian eatery also serves appetizers and desserts.

Hapy Bistro

Technically located in the neighboring community of Pismo Beach, Hapy Bistro is a Mediterranean-American restaurant that serves up kefta kabobs right alongside its burgers. Along with the playground and waterfront area, the park offers event space including a reception area and a wedding gazebo.

Swinging Bridge

The only bridge of its kind in the entire state of California, Swinging Bridge was originally constructed all the way back in 1875 — but don’t worry, it’s been restored and upgraded since then. Still, though, this feat of engineering allows brave visitors to meander its length 40 feet above the creek that runs below. It’s all free of charge, so nothing’s stopping you (aside from your fear of heights, of course!).

Hit the Beach

When you’re in California, the equation’s easy: when in doubt, beach it out! Located a stone’s throw from Pismo Beach and with many other beaches dotting the coast both north and south of Arroyo Grande, there’s no shortage of places to put your toes in the sand and your skin in the sun. You might even decide to take up surfing — why not? (Of course, the board ain’t free, in that case!)
