Strawberry Hill Loop
The Strawberry Hill Loop trail offers a scenic hike near Miles City. The trail features certain sections that are very open and others that are wooded. Since the loop trail is a popular destination for hikers and trail runners, you'll most likely be sharing it with a fair amount of other people. Dogs, unfortunately, are not permitted on the Strawberry Hill Loop.

Four Dances Trail
Located in the Four Dances Natural Area near Billings, MT, the Four Dances Trail is a loop trail with some mild elevation gain. The trail takes you near a calm river and features plenty of lush plant life. In addition to hiking, the Four Dances Trail is a popular spot for trail running as well. You can bring your dogs along, but you must keep them leashed at all times.

Fishing and Boating
If you're a fishing enthusiast, you'll certainly be happy visiting the Howrey Island Recreation Area. The Yellowstone River, which flows within walking distance of the site, is known as a fantastic river to catch several varieties of trout. If you want to cool down, you can also jump into the river for a refreshing swim. Alternatively, you can spend your day paddling or enjoying a relaxing float as you watch the beautiful scenery of the area pass you by.
Wildlife Viewing
If you keep your eyes on the sky, the Howrey Island Recreation Area offers the chance to observe a variety of interesting birds. Some of the species that you may spot in the region include American white pelicans, spotted sandpipers, hairy woodpeckers, western wood peewees, and even bald eagles. As for wildlife on the ground, the proximity to the river makes it likely that you'll observe a few animals during your visit. You may be lucky enough to spot elk, antelope, badgers, coyotes, moose, mule deer, grizzly bears, black bears, and many more.
Picnicking
Although you may not find any designated picnic areas or tables at the Howrey Island BLM site, that doesn't mean that you can't find a peaceful spot nearby. If you don't want to make the trip to one of the area's established campgrounds to find a picnic setup, you can simply stake out your own spot. Most likely, your most enjoyable option will be to bring a blanket down near the banks of the Yellowstone River and enjoy your food while relaxing by the water. If you're lucky, you may even spot some local wildlife stopping by to get a drink from the cool river.
