This campground is located 127 miles south of Redwood National Park and 387 miles north of Yosemite National Park, making it ideal for a weekend of camping within the beautiful state of California. The Chemise Mountain Trailhead is located 1.5 miles from Nadelos Campground.

Chemise Mountain Trail

The Chemise Mountain Trail is a short round-trip hike to the summit of Chemise Mountain. The trailhead is located at the northern end of Nadelos Campground and climbs 800 feet in 0.5 miles. This is an easy hike with switchbacks. While it is a steep trail, hikers are rewarded with vistas of the coastline and the inland mountain range from the 2,598-foot summit of Chemise Mountain.

King Crest Trail

The King Crest Trail is a more advanced hike. The singletrack trail gains about 2,400 feet. The King Crest Trail climbs to 8,099 feet in four miles and ascends through Mount Shasta to 9,280 feet from Mill Creek Campground on the California Coast and back down to Nadelos Campground.

There are several streams within the vicinity of Nadelos Campground. Visitors can fish in these streams in some seasons. Benbow Lake State Recreation Area, situated about 45 minutes north of Nadelos Campground, has the most fishing options during the winter. This area is one of the few places you can fish for wild salmon and rainbow trout.

There are several cliffs and crags within the vicinity of Nadelos Campground. These can be climbed, depending on the season. Castle Crags, Castle Dome, and Black Butte are located less than a mile from Redwood National Park. Castle Crag hosts some of the world's most popular rock climbing sites, with over 1,500 climbing routes rated from beginner to expert.

There are a variety of plants and animals that inhabit the vicinity of Nadelos Campground including American black bears, elk, bobcats, mountain lions, and black-tailed deer.

If you don't want to bring a tent to this BLM public land, there is an RV camping option within 35 miles from Nadelos Campground. Giant Redwoods RV & Cabin Destination offers a 30-foot RV site six miles from Redwood National Park. The campground provides several essential amenities, such as showers, an activity playground, Wi-Fi, cable TV, a volleyball court, a river beach, and a convenience store. Located 48 miles away is Ancient Redwoods RV Park, which offers camping for tents, RVs, and trailers.

For those on a budget, there are Bureau of Land Management free camping opportunities within a few miles of Nadelos Campground. Wailaki Campground is located 0.3 miles away and offers free dispersed camping. This campground has vault toilets, a fire pit, and picnic tables. However, like many Bureau of Land Management campgrounds, Wailaki does not have potable water. Visitors can drink water from a nearby creek.

Nadelos Campground is open year-round, and the temperatures within the campground vary depending on the season. Highs in winter can be around 37 degrees while in summer they can be as warm as 75 degrees. Bring proper clothing for yourself and your family members to accommodate any changes in weather during your visit. BLM regulations require that you take care of the land you visit and leave it in the same or better condition than when you found it. Your campsite should be situated 100 feet away from water, trails, or other campsites. In addition, the area around your camp should not be trampled down, and there should not be any evidence that a campfire was made. Also, ensure you pack out all your garbage to help keep the land clean.

To reach Nadelos Campground from Whitethorn, CA, get onto Briceland Road and drive 3.7 miles before turning left onto Shelter Cove Road. From Shelter Cove, drive 4.6 miles and turn left to stay on Shelter Cove Road. Stay on the road for another 0.5 miles and turn left onto Chemise Mountain Road. Continue along the road, and you'll reach the campground 1.8 miles from the turn-off.
