Located in northeastern California, the Hobo Camp Day Use Area is a scenic outdoor area under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The site, which is one of numerous BLM locations found around California, is located along the Bizz Johnson Trail and is a popular spot for picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and a variety of other recreational activities. Many visitors to the site take the time to visit the nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is one of the most fascinating natural areas in the country. The amazing national park is located only about 30 minutes west of the Hobo Camp Day Use Area.

Bizz Johnson Trail

The Bizz Johnson Trail is a very long trail that runs right through the Hobo Camp Day Use Area. The popular point-to-point trail offers great opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and camping. The trail is fairly remote, and visitors have a good chance of enjoying some solitude. The best times to explore the trail are between May and October, and you're welcome to bring your dogs along.

Cinder Cone Nature Trail

Located in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Cinder Cone Nature Trail is a challenging hike that takes visitors through the area's unique landscape. The route will guide you to the top of Cinder Cone, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the amazing lava beds and surrounding area. Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed on this trail.

Manzanita Lake Loop

If you're looking for an easier trek in the Lassen Volcanic National Park area, the Manzanita Lake Loop is an excellent choice. The partially paved loop trail is kid-friendly, stroller-friendly, and wheelchair-friendly. In addition to hiking, visitors to the trail often participate in fishing, bird watching, and camping. The route takes hikers along the peaceful waters of Manzanita Lake and offers tremendous views of the nearby Lassen Peak.

The closest fishing opportunities to the Hobo Camp Day Use Area are found at the Susan River, which is located within walking distance of the BLM site. The small stream is home to rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Another popular body of water in the area is Eagle Lake, which serves as an excellent fishing spot between Memorial Day Weekend and the end of October. Some of the fish species you might reel in include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, musky, and panfish. The lake also features a marina and several boat ramps, making it a popular destination for boating and a variety of watersports.

There are a fair number of climbing opportunities near the Hobo Camp Day Use Area BLM site. If you enjoy mountaineering, you can head to the impressive Lassen Peak, which is one of the most accessible volcanoes in the Cascades. No technical climbing is required to reach the summit, and the view from up there is truly magnificent. In the same general area, Lassen Volcanic National Park offers several climbing opportunities. The most popular spot is Eagle Peak, where you can partake in bouldering or take on one of the sport or traditional climbing routes.

While exploring the trails near the Hobo Camp Day Use Area, you'll have an excellent chance of spotting local wildlife. Various species are known to inhabit the area, such as coyotes, bobcats, foxes, mule deer, cougars, black bears, skunks, raccoons, and even long-toed salamanders. Many interesting birds have been regularly spotted in the area as well, including the great gray owl, rough-legged hawk, ruffed grouse, and pileated woodpecker.

The Hobo Camp Day Use Area is a wonderful place to sit down for a pleasant picnic lunch. The site features just about everything you need in a picnic area; there are picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and restrooms. The area is located right on the banks of the Susan River, so you'll be able to listen to the gentle flow of the water while you enjoy your food.

If you're hoping to partake in RV camping, you'll need to do so outside of the Hobo Camp Day Use Area. The gates to the BLM site close at 8 pm, and you won't find any Bureau of Land Management campgrounds at the site. However, there are several nearby RV parks that you can choose from if you need a place to stay. One good option within a few miles is the Susanville Village RV Park, which is known for its peaceful atmosphere and friendly staff.

As long as you set up your campsite outside the boundaries of the Hobo Camp Day Use Area, you're welcome to enjoy Bureau of Land Management free camping. If you decide to go that route, you'll have a couple of options. You could set up your own dispersed campsite somewhere in the surrounding forest, or you could check if there are any primitive campsites available at the nearby Bizz Johnson Trail Walk-in Camp Area.

To reach the Hobo Camp Day Use Area BLM site from Susanville, CA, follow Main St. until you reach Weatherlow Street and turn toward the south. Follow Weatherlow for 3/4 mile, then take a right onto South Street and follow it for 1/2 mile. At the intersection, take a right onto Hobo Camp Road, and that will take you right to the day-use area.
