This state park is located in the Lake Mineral Wells area, and it is the only park that protects the Mineral Wells Trailway and Western Cross Timbers. The trailway dates back to the 1880s when the route was used for the Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railway. You can see the unusual geological feature that resembles a small canyon known as Penitentiary Hollow. Lake Mineral Wells State Park is also home to native wildlife, including squirrels, white-tailed deer and wild turkey. The nearest cities are Mineral Wells, Millsap and Garner, TX.

Lake Mineral Wells is a popular place for rock climbing, but you can only use a top-rope climb to scale the cliffs. If you love trails, you will not want to miss the 31 miles of hiking trails. There are also 25 miles of trails that are open for both bicycles and horses. You can even try your hand at backcountry camping with campsites by the park's small lake. Lake Mineral Wells is home to many types of native plant life, including sunflowers, milkweed, goldenrod, bluebonnets, and several species of cacti. Anglers can fish for crappies, bluegills, sunfish, bass, and catfish.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is only an hour from Fort Worth. When you enter Mineral Wells, the state park is 4 miles east of the town on U.S. Highway 180. From Weatherford, you need to take U.S. Highway 180 for 14 miles west to the park.
