Wakonda State Park is a 1,054-acre park located in the northeast corner of Missouri. The park was established in 1960 on 273 acres of land transferred from the Missouri Highway Commission. In 1992, another 777-acre tract of land was added to the park by the state. The park is open year-round and offers a variety of activities within its borders, including hiking, fishing and nature watching.

RV Resorts & Campsites in Wakonda State Park
Visitors have their choice between two campgrounds when staying at Wakonda State Park. Boulder Lake Campground is found immediately to the left of the park headquarters when you enter the park. Wakonda Lake Campground is located in the southern end of the park. Both campgrounds feature playgrounds, restrooms, showers and vault toilets. Some sites offer full hooks while others are primitive or electric only.

Wakonda State Park
Wakonda State Park offers visitors the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. Sportsmen are able to cast a line in one of the six lakes within the park while those who are more adventurous can enjoy the hiking trails or take a canoe out onto the water. The unique terrain, woods and water sources attract thousands of migratory waterfowl each year, making the park a bird lover’s paradise.
With over 1,000 acres of land at your disposal, there is no shortage of adventures to enjoy while visiting Wakonda State Park. Five different trails offer you the ability to explore every corner of the park while also taking in the beautiful sights of the park's six lakes.
Fishing
Anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish when casting their line into one of the lakes. Both Wakonda Lake and Agate Lake have boat launches, providing easy access to the water. Please note that boat motors must be operated at idle speed on these lakes as well.
Nature Watching
Wakonda State Park is full of interesting wildlife such as coyotes, beavers, white-tail deer, badgers and muskrats. Bird lovers will also enjoy their stay at the park as dozens of different species have been spotted in the park. Make sure to download a bird checklist from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources website so that you can note which species you saw during your stay.
Stargazing
The tree clearings near the six lakes within the park offer stargazers a terrific opportunity to catch their favorite constellations in the night sky.
Hiking
Visitors will find five different hiking trails in the park. These trails take hikers around several of the lakes as well as through the sand prairie.
Boating
Two boat launches provide easy access to Wakonda Lake and Agate Lake if you have your own boat. Kayaks and johnboats are available for rent at a rate of $5 per hour or $20 per day.
Swimming
A designated swimming area with sandy beach is located along Wakonda Lake. Please keep in mind that there is no lifeguard on duty, so swim at your own risk.
Biking
Mountain biking is permitted on the Agate Lake Trail, Sand Prairie Trail and Quartz Lake Trail. Additional bike paths can be found along the Campground Trail and Jasper Lake Trail.
How to Get to
Wakonda State Park
Wakonda State Park is located at 32836 State Pk Rd, La Grange, MO 63448. If you are traveling to the park from Hannibal, MO, you will need to take US-61 N. Once on US-61 N, you will drive until you reach the exit for 327th Ave/Outer Rd where you will turn right. After exiting the highway, you make a left at the first cross street onto 327th Ave/Outer Rd. Take this road for just over one mile and then turn right to enter the park.
Entering Wakonda State Park
Wakonda State Park is open from 7 a.m. to sunset every day throughout the year. As soon as you enter the park, you will come upon the park office. When you pass the park office, you can turn right or left. Traveling to the right will take you to the Wakonda Lake Campground while traveling to the left will take you to the Boulder Lake Campground. A large parking area with access to several trailheads is found in the middle of the park. To get to this parking area, you will need to turn right when going past the park office and then make a left hand turn before you reach the campground.
There is no fee to enter the park. The only fees you need to worry about are your nightly camping fees and if you wish to rent a boat or kayak during your stay.
