Located on a mile of shoreline along Higgins Lake in Michigan, South Higgins Lake State Park is a beautiful spot that is one of the largest Michigan state park campgrounds. The park is on the north-central Lower Peninsula, near Grayling and Roscommon, Michigan. It covers 1,364 acres. Higgins Lake is known for its clarity, as it's fed by a local spring. The park is a haven for water lovers, with nine boat launches, a boat washing station, and lots of boating access. Boat rentals are available at the lake as well. Along with boating on Higgins Lake, visitors can also take nonmotorized boats and electric motorboats out on Marl Lake within the park.
Nearby Grayling also has lots of outdoor activities, and you can hike, fish, and boat in the area. History lovers will enjoy the living history farm at Wellington Farm, USA and the Crawford County and Lovells Historical Museums. The average weather at South Higgins Lake State Park is very cold in winter, with lows in the single digits. Summers are pleasant, with highs around 80°F in the very warmest months. The park hosts many events, including a fall Harvest Fest each October.

There is one modern campground in the park, but it's the second-largest state park campground in the state!
South Higgins Lake-Modern Campground
The South Higgins Lake Modern Campground is the second-largest in the entire state park system. The campground has 400 sites in total. It includes tent sites, full hook-up sites, and a mini-cabin. Many of the campsites are nicely shaded. There are also two designated swimming areas in the campground. A camp store sells firewood, ice, grocery items, ice cream, and souvenirs.

Great Circle Campground
Great Circle Campground is in-between Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake in Roscommon, MI. It's a family-friendly campground with lots of shade and a camp store.

What to Do at
South Higgins Lake State Park
Inside South Higgins Lake State Park
South Higgins Lake State Park is a great place to camp, but the lake is also a big draw for anyone who loves water activities! You can enjoy motorized boating, fishing, paddling, and swimming on the lake. You can also enjoy non-motorized boats on the smaller Marl Lake.
Hiking: There are several hiking trails in the park, including the easy Green Trail, the harder Red Trail and the Blue Trail which is a 5.5-mile loop that goes by a river and wanders through wetlands.
Boating: Higgins Lake has plenty of boating access including a boat basin, nine boat launches, and a boat washing station. Nearby Marl Lake is a quieter spot for non-motorized boats and electric motor boats. You can rent boats in the park if you don't have your own. You can also paddle in a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard.
Fishing: Higgins Lake as stocked lake trout and rainbow trout. There are also lake whitefish and lake herring that live naturally in the lake. Rock bass, yellow perch, and rainbow smelt are also caught, and you may also see some northern pike.
How to Get to
South Higgins Lake State Park
The park is 9 miles from Roscommon, Michigan. To get there from Roscommon, head northwest on S. 5th St toward Lake St./ N M-18. Turn left at the first cross street onto Lake St. Turn right onto E. Sunset Dr. Continue onto N. Cut Rd. Continue onto E. Higgins Lake Dr. Turn right onto State Park Dr. and follow signs to the park. If you're headed to the park from Grayling, that's about a 23-minute drive. Head northeast on Michigan Ave. toward Cedar St./ M-72 E. Turn right at the first cross street onto Cedar St./M-72 E. Continue on M-72 E. Continue straight onto I-75BL. Merge onto I-75 S. Take exit 244 toward I-75 BUS/Roscommon. Turn right onto Old 76. Turn left onto Ivy Rd. Continue onto N. Cut Rd. and take that to E. Higgins Lake Dr. Turn right onto State Park Dr. and follow signs to the park.
