The 900-acre reservoir is an excellent place to go boating, swimming, jet skiing, and water skiing. You can also go hunting for big game in the northern part of this park after Labor Day. Bring along your fishing poles anytime you come so that you can catch northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and other fish species. You will even want to visit this state park in the winter when you can go snowshoeing, skiing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing. While you'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, Elkhead Reservoir State Park is located near the cities of Craig, Steamboat Springs, and Hayden in Colorado.

What to Do at
Elkhead Reservoir State Park

Inside Elkhead Reservoir State Park

Since the creation of Elkhead Reservoir in 1974, this state park has been a favorite place to camp, fish, boat, and ski on the water. Over 10 miles of hiking trails are available, and you can often see a variety of large and small animals when you're hiking. Spring, summer, and fall are popular fishing times at this park, and anglers often catch their northern pike limit. With a permit, you can go hunting after Labor Day for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, and bear in the Elkhead Reservoir area. 

Outside Elkhead Reservoir State Park

Moffat County is home to one of the last free-roaming herds of wild mustangs in the United States, and you may be able to catch a glimpse of them. The nearby town of Craig, Colorado, is known as the Elk Capital of the World, and the city loves to hold festivals throughout the year. You can also find great places to dine, shop, and visit in the area.

View one of the largest collections of Western memorabilia owned by a private individual by touring the old store, barn, blacksmith shop, and one-room schoolhouse located at the Wyman Living History Museum. While you're there, be sure to take a selfie with Junior, their elk mascot.

This ski resort, which is about 40 miles to the east of Elkhead Reservoir State Park, offers over 150 ski trails in the winter. During the summer months, you can go rafting, mountain biking, zip-lining, and golfing.

How to Get to
Elkhead Reservoir State Park

You can reach this park easily from Steamboat Springs by heading west on U.S. 40 W. Just over 10 miles after you pass through Hayden, turn a sharp right on County Road 29. Keep going northeast on County Road 29, which turns into County Road 86. In 3.9 miles, turn right on County Road 28, and you'll arrive at the park. 

Entering Elkhead Reservoir State Park

Elkhead Reservoir State Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. The office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Sunday.
