Fairfield officially became a city in 1955, but the area's history dates back much further. Miami and Shawnee Native Americans originally inhabited it. Then, John Cleves Symmes, an explorer and member of the Continental Congress, purchased about 300,000 acres of what would become Butler County, where Fairfield is located. The purchase also included parts of modern-day Hamilton and Warren counties. One of Symmes' relatives founded an area called Symmes Corner. This later became Fairfield's central hub. The inhabitants were primarily pioneers who'd fought in the Revolutionary War. Impressed by the natural beauty of the region's rolling hills and open fields, they dubbed it Fairfield.
In the 1850s, the railway connected Fairfield to Cincinnati and Dayton, which caused the population to boom. Through the early 1900s, the area continued to grow. More transportation options, including two major highways, were created. When nearby Hamilton tried to annex the land, residents joined to incorporate Fairfield officially.
Its proximity to Cincinnati and Dayton made it a popular suburb for commuters through the 1990s. Today, it has around 45,000 residents. Major businesses, such as the Cincinnati Financial Corporation, Koch Foods, Skyline Chili, and Pacific Manufacturing, are headquartered there. There are multiple parks, a massive international supermarket, and an active community arts scene. One of the best public colleges in the country, Miami University, is nearby, with a satellite campus in Hamilton.
Once called "the city of opportunity," Fairfield continues to grow while maintaining its natural beauty.
