Before it became Bossier City, this area of Louisiana was a plantation called Elysian Grove. The plantation was purchased by James Cane and his wife Mary Doal Cilley Bennett Cane. They ran a trading post across the nearby Red River, which was called Cane's Landing. During the Civil War, many Confederate soldiers shipped out from Cane's Landing aboard steamboats. The area finally began developing into a true city during the late 19th century when Mary Cane's granddaughter began selling lots. Originally, the new settlement was called Cane City, and it was officially incorporated in 1907. Around the time of incorporation, Cane City was renamed Bossier City.
