Explore Cumming, Georgia, in an RVshare RV Rental

The region where Cumming is now located was once used by Cherokee tribes as hunting lands. Disputes between groups eventually led to some of the tribes leaving the area. After settlers arrived, the Europeans and the Native Americans coexisted for several decades until gold veins were discovered in the late 1920s. This prompted the European settlers to sign the Treaty of New Echota, which resulted in the removal of tens of thousands of Native Americans to the other side of the Mississippi River. The area became known as Cherokee County, and Cumming was formed several years later in 1833. While the original inspiration for the town name is unclear, many believe it honors Colonel William Cumming.

The city benefited from gold mining for a few decades until the California Gold Rush impacted the business. After many years of ups and downs, Cumming is currently thriving as a commuter city for Atlanta. Visitors can explore the recreational area on top of Sawnee Mountain and enjoy luxurious afternoons boating on Lake Lanier. Notable locals include singer and actress Skyler Day and actor Billy Magnussen.

Lake Lanier is a reservoir on the eastern edge of Cumming. It encompasses 38,000 acres and has almost 700 miles of shoreline when it's at normal water level. The lake was formed when the Buford Dam and Chattahoochee River were completed in the 1950s. More than 10 million people visit the lake every year to boat, ski, and pass the hours away at the Lake Lanier Islands waterpark.

Sawnee Mountain is a five-mile low mountain range with an elevation of almost 2,000 feet. The Sawnee Mountain Preserve manages 963 acres of land and allows it to be recreationally used by campers and hikers. The on-site visitor center holds regular classes and has a multitude of interactive displays about the mountain's cultural history.
