Situated about 15 miles south of Austin on US Highway 183, you'll find Mustang Ridge, a small city that inherited its name from a short range of hills in the region. In the past, travelers taking the stagecoach from Gonzales to Austin would stop in this area. Trail drivers with cattle herds en route to Kansas would also stop here to quench their thirst at local watering holes.
Ranching was the main occupation in Mustang Ridge until cotton growing became popular around 1900. However, after the Great Depression, drought and poverty prompted many struggling families to abandon their farms. Ranching was eventually rekindled in the area, although on a lesser scale, along with cotton farming.
Charles and Alton Laws worked tirelessly to establish Mustang Ridge as a city in 1985. They helped set up a city boundary that included around 2,500 acres, with the help of Messrs. Webb, Sanders, and Robertson. The town later grew to incorporate parts of Caldwell County to the north, Travis County to the south, and Bastrop County to the southwest by 1990. Today, the population of Mustang Ridge is about 1,230.
If you happen to visit Mustang Ridge, treat yourself to some ice cream at the Baskin Robbins on Stassney before going to the O'Henry Museum to see some terrific art pieces. You can dance the night away at the El Flamingo Club if you're more about the nightlife. The bottom line is that you can't run out of things to do while at Mustang Ridge.
