The Atfalati people are the earliest known inhabitants of present-day Hillsboro. The first European settlers in the area were part of the Great Migration of 1843 when almost 1,000 settlers traveled west on the Oregon Trail. In 1844, a group of settlers led by Amos King established a community at the site of Hillsboro. The town was named after David Hill, an Oregon legislator who had advocated for the settlement. 

The early years of Hillsboro were marked by conflict between the settlers and the native people. In 1847, armed settlers marched into the Tualatin Valley to claim the land. This led to the Cayuse War, in which the settlers were eventually victorious. In the 1850s and 1860s, Hillsboro grew as more settlers arrived. The city was incorporated in 1876. The railroad's arrival in 1876 led to further growth, and Hillsboro soon became an important center for agriculture and commerce. 

The city's population increased in the early 20th century, and Hillsboro became a city of more than 10,000 people by the 1920s. The city's economy was diversified, with agriculture, manufacturing, and retail businesses. The Great Depression of the 1930s hit Hillsboro hard, and the city's economy did not fully recover until the start of World War II. During the war, the city's industries turned to war production, and Hillsboro became a major center for shipbuilding. 

After the war, Hillsboro's economy shifted back to agriculture and commerce. The city continued to grow throughout the second half of the 20th century, and by the 1990s, it had become a major suburb of Portland. Today, Hillsboro is a blossoming city with 108,000 people. The city is home to several high-tech companies, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Hillsboro is also a major art center with several museums, galleries, and theaters.
