Archeologists believe that the first people to live in Hatteras started a community around 500 A.D. It's possible that Hatteras was the landing location for the 115 settlers who made up the Lost Colony. European settlers arrived in the early 1700s, and people have lived in the city ever since. Learn more about the early inhabitants by visiting the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center, located about 4 miles northeast of the town. 

As shipping grew, this area became known as one of the most dangerous locations globally because of the constantly changing current, and experts believe that over 5,000 ships sank near Hatteras. Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to learn more about them before seeing the currents for yourself by visiting the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. 

One of the reasons the current is always shifting near Hatteras is that the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current meet. To better understand weather conditions, the United States government established a weather station in this community in 1874. While it moved in its early days three times, you can visit the U.S. Weather Bureau at the national seashore, which government workers constructed in 1901.

You may also want to get crabs, clams, and shrimp at Dinky's Waterfront Restaurant.
