Culpeper County was chartered in 1749 when the county was cut off from Orange County. This new county was named for Lord Thomas Culpeper, who was the Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1680 to 1683. George Washington was sent to survey and plot this new county and the town of Culpeper, Virginia. In 1759, an Act of the General Assembly officially established the town of Culpeper.

The Revolutionary War started in 1775 and significantly affected the area. Once this war started, a cadre of 350 men from Culpeper, Fauquier, and Orange counties organized as the Culpeper Minute Men Battalion. These men fought in the American Revolution under a flag with a rattlesnake with 13 rattles and the words "Liberty or Death-Don't Tread on Me." One member of this group, John Jameson, was crucial in exposing Benedict Arnold as a traitor. Jameson and the other Minute Men also fought at Great Bridge, the first American Revolution battle in Virginia.

Almost a century after this war ended, Culpeper became a strategic location during the Civil War. The railroad's site in Culpeper made it a vital supply station for both sides. Over 100 battles and skirmishes were fought in or around Culpeper during the Civil War to maintain control of this railroad station. These battles brought devastation to the area as well as a loss of life, homes, buildings, firearms, and historical artifacts.

It took the town years of reconstruction to recover after this war. Today, the population of Culpeper stands at a little over 20,000. Close by, you can visit the Lacey House, where the arm of Stonewall Jackson, who was injured in the Battle of Chancellorsville, is buried. The rest of his body was later buried in Lexington, Virginia. Four major Civil War battle sites are within a few miles of downtown. These battles include Brandy Station, Cedar Mountain, Kelly's Ford, and Culpeper Court House. Culpeper offers a variety of outdoor recreational areas, including Culpeper National Cemetery, Lake Pelham Adventure Park, and Yowell Meadow Park. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy a bite at the various local restaurants, including Luigi's Italian Restaurant, Albana's Taverna, and Grass Rootes.
