During the early 1800s, an American settler by the name of Samuel Lambeth established a store at the Kentucky Stock Road and Great Stage Road junction. Other settlers soon joined the community, which took on the name of Lambeth's Crossroads. By the year 1830, the town’s name had been changed to Crossville. In 1856, Crossville was made the county seat of the newly formed Cumberland County. The town suffered greatly during the Civil War, experiencing widespread pillaging, divided families, and the consistent occupation of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The city was finally incorporated in 1901, three decades after the Civil War. Today, Crossville boasts more than 12,000 citizens, a variety of pristine golf courses, and a host of recreational opportunities.
