Cleveland was founded in 1836 after the forced removal of the Cherokee people from the region in 1835. The Cherokees were assembled and detained in Rattlesnake Springs and Blythe Ferry in Meigs County. The town was named after Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a military leader at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The city was incorporated on February 1842, and the first mayor was elected on April 4, 1842.

Many of Cleveland's earliest citizens made a living from farming, but the establishment of the railroad in 1851 and the introduction of copper mining in Polk County in the 1840s brought new opportunities to the area. However, the town's growth was slowed when the Civil War began in 1861 and during the early Reconstruction years.

As of 2021, Cleveland had a population of 47,995, and its economy was driven primarily by agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The town is rich in history and has many attractions for residents and tourists, including the Cherokee National Forest through which the Ocoee and Hiwassee rivers flow. You can enjoy rafting, canoeing, fishing, camping, and hiking in this scenic wilderness area.

The museum center, located at Five Points, downtown Cleveland, has exhibits about the town and its people. You can also head to the Ocoee Regional Nature Center to learn more about the various trees it contains. If you visit the city in early October, you can enjoy the Cleveland Apple Festival, held every year on the third Saturday of October. The festival provides entertainment and events for the whole family to enjoy. In addition, be sure to take a walk on the Red Clay State Historical Park, the grounds where the Cherokee converged following their forced removal.
