Depending on the route you choose, the road between Seattle and Salt Lake City spans about 12 or 14 hours and nearly 1,000 miles — each of which is packed with incredible scenery and once-in-a-lifetime stops that will make the journey one you and your family will never forget. Although it’s a relatively short flight between these two cities, driving gives you the opportunity to see every mile pass up close and personal and to custom-create your own trip of a lifetime — and given the wide variety of landscapes and cities between these two end destinations, there are so many different ways to go about it.
Why Is This Route Popular?
The main choice you’ll need to make is between taking I-84 mostly directly southeast from Seattle — a route that’ll make it easy to access North Cascades National Park, Mount Rainier, and eastern-Oregon gems like Wallowa Lake State Park (which also offers incredible camping right alongside hiking trails). Then, you’d cut through Boise (right near Boise National Forest) and Twin Falls before heading south into Utah’s capital. If you have a few extra hours and miles to spare, however, you can cut east before Yakima to take I-90 through Idaho’s panhandle, an option that will bring you into western Montana and make outdoor recreation destinations like Glacier National Park, Lolo National Forest and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest possible. You might even be able to tack on Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks if you’ve got enough time, and a one-way RV rental makes it possible to save all the time you’ve budgeted for the trip specifically for exploring (rather than having to drive back all the way you came).
