A fun-filled event, the first South Dakota State Fair was held way back in 1885. Since then, the fair has grown to include a number of amazing events, performers, and booths. Whether you’re looking to enjoy carnival-style rides, celebrity musical acts, or friendly competition with your neighbors, this event is sure to have something for you.
Onstage entertainment is wonderful but is far from the only thing to see at this event. A carnival will run several days and will feature some fabulous rides for the whole family to enjoy.
Meanwhile, competitions in everything from livestock, agriculture, and fishing to arm wrestling and LEGO building are happening throughout the event, and are always fun to see.
The wine pavilion is well worth a visit, and the dozens of vendors are great to check out during your visit.
In order to keep guests comfortable and safe, South Dakota State Fair provides a number of onsite amenities. These include golf cart shuttles that are available for anyone to ride throughout the fair, as well as shuttle buses for those who must travel longer distances.
First aid stations and scooter rentals are also available for those who need them. Of course, as is the case with any fair, food and drink vendors are plentiful, meaning you’re sure to find something delicious to enjoy when mealtime rolls around.
South Dakota State Fair is held in Huron, SD at the State Fairgrounds.

The South Dakota State Fair features tons of free performances and entertainment by both local and out-of-state performers. These shows can be found while strolling the grounds, on one of the several stages—including the AARP Centennial Stage, NorthWestern Energy Freedom Stage, Farmland Bureau Dakotaland Stage, and DeSmet Farm Metal Insurance Stage—or in various other buildings. Entertainment includes dancing, singing, a pageant, an auction, and much more.
Of course, there is also the option of attending a separately ticketed Grandstand event. The 2024 Grandstand lineup is TBA — click here to check for updates!
RVing is always a great way to enjoy any fair. Camping on or very close to the fairgrounds means you can hop in an out of the action throughout the day and never miss out on any of the awesome events and activities offered.
Camping at South Dakota State Fair is very popular. Those who have camped at the fair in the past get first-pick of sites. In mid-April, reservations open up to the general public and tend to include spots in the Gate H and Gate 13 campgrounds.
Both Gate H and Gate 13 are a bit further from the fairgrounds than some other options. That said, the sites in these areas are bigger. Points of note:
Gate H has no restroom or shower onsite, but those staying in this area may use the nearby Pasque Park facilities.
Gate 13 does provide guests with a shower house and restroom facilities.
Both campgrounds have some electric and water sites available.
To reserve your site at the State Fair, visit this web page. All reservations are for the duration of the fair. Costs range from $TBA for a site with no hookups to $TBA for a site with water, electric, and sewer. No matter what kind of site you end up with, general admission tickets are included for all days of the fair.
Recommendations for nearby hotels can be found here. If you are looking for a deal on your lodging, checking out travel websites like Travelocity or Expedia.
The South Dakota State Fair is located in Huron, South Dakota off of Market Street, Lincoln Avenue, and Nevada Avenue.
This is a convenient enough location, but parking at the fairgrounds is limited, causing problems for those who drive in.
If you plan on driving a car to the fair and won’t have a campsite to park on, we recommend reserving a nearby parking spot using a service such as ParkMe. This will allow you to park close and walk in, which will save you the hassle of attempting to locate a spot in the busy fair crowds.
