Padre Island National Seashore

The longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world, this national seashore protects 70 miles of coastline. There’s plenty to do besides swimming including kayaking, fishing, boating, and camping. If you time it right, you can even watch sea turtles hatch. Padre Island National Seashore is run by the National Park Service, with a variety of ranger programs to learn more about the area.

Boca Chica Beach

Just across the Rio Grande from Mexico lies Boca Chica Beach. This stretch of sand is pretty undeveloped with no facilities, so bring water, food, and beach equipment. You can swim, surf, snorkel, and fish without crowds or boardwalks. It’s also great for birdwatching and spotting wildlife.

You’re right by the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge if you want to learn more about the area and watch wildlife. You can also check out Boca Chica State Park, and you’re just south of South Padre Island.

Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island State Park has more than 5 miles of sandy beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a great spot to relax, swim, or lay in the sand. For something more active, try kayaking or canoeing along the 20-mile Mustang Island Paddling Trail or go fishing.

Corpus Christi is about 15 miles away, and San Antonio is a manageable drive. 

Rockport Beach

Rockport Beach overlooks Aransas Bay and features an 800-foot fishing pier. The shallow waters and playgrounds make it ideal for families. There are picnic areas, volleyball courts, and a walking path. It’s also Texas’s first Blue Wave Beach, certified by the Clean Beaches Coalition. Dogs, fires, and overnight camping are not allowed.

Explore Rockport, then head to Corpus Christi for more activities. You’re also close to Mustang Island State Park and Port Aransas.

Crystal Beach

Located on the Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach is known for hermit crabs and birding. Take the ferry from Galveston to reach it. Spend your day crabbing, birdwatching, or fishing, then grill or have a campfire. Overnight camping is allowed on the beach for tents and RVs.

Take the ferry back to Galveston and explore the town, or head into Houston nearby.

Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach offers miles of sand and stronger waves, making it great for surfing and windsurfing. You can also fish from the jetty, book deep sea fishing, or explore the Surfside Bird and Butterfly Trail.

You’re near Freeport and within driving distance of Houston, Galveston, and Crystal Beach.

North Beach

Located across the harbor from Corpus Christi, North Beach has 1.5 miles of sand and plenty of activities. Nearby are the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington, a WWII aircraft carrier turned museum. The paved Beachwalk connects these attractions.

Port Aransas

This beach town on Mustang Island offers more than just sand. You can kayak or paddleboard along the Mustang Island Paddle Trail, go fishing, or enjoy birdwatching along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The town also hosts festivals like Texas SandFest each spring.

Explore Mustang Island State Park or head south to Padre Island National Seashore. Corpus Christi is about 15 miles away, and San Antonio is within driving distance.

Galveston Island East Beach

East Beach is Texas’s largest beach and a popular destination. It hosts concerts and festivals throughout the summer and allows alcohol (no glass containers). In the offseason, it’s ideal for walking, birdwatching, and fishing.

Visit the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier for rides and entertainment. Houston is about an hour away, and Crystal Beach is nearby for a quieter option.

South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a resort town on a 34-mile barrier island with views of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a hub for kite-surfing, parasailing, deep sea fishing, and dolphin watching. March brings spring break crowds, but the rest of the year is quieter and family-friendly.
