Located south of Casper, the Muddy Mountain EEA is a famous recreation site managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The 1,260-acre site is subdivided into three different areas: a developed area, a natural area, and a multi-use trail and recreation zone. The natural area sits on 700 acres of land, and non-motorized recreational activities like hiking, primitive camping, and biking are not allowed in this part of the EEA. The trail network within this area accommodates mountain bikers, horseback riders, and hikers. The most popular part of this BLM land is the developed area. This 170-acre zone features Lodgepole and Rim Campgrounds and the Interpretive Nature Trail. Camping is allowed in this part, but it's restricted to the developed campsites.

The remaining part of the EEA comprises a general recreation zone and multi-use trails. The area features Corral Loop Road, which provides travelers with motorized access to a bigger part of this area. ATVs can use the multi-use trail during the summer season, but only snowmobiles can access it in the winter. Primitive camping without facilities is also permitted in this area. The division of the EEA increases the range of outdoor recreational opportunities in the BLM land. Opportunities for viewing wildlife in this BLM site are favorable since the grasslands and sagebrush vegetation provide a good habitat for elks, antelopes, deer, foxes, and blue grouse. Visitors can also participate in other recreational activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. What to See and Do

Hiking and Biking

Interpretive Nature Trail

This two-mile route is located in the developed area of the EEA, and it connects the Rim and Lodgepole Campgrounds. It features two overlooks that give travelers an exceptional view of the lower valley. The trail is handicapped-accessible and contains 28 interpretive signs. Travel along this route is restricted to hiking only.

Muddy Mountain Loop Trail

This loop trail is near Casper, Wyoming, and features a remarkable forest setting. It is mainly used for mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Dogs can also use this path, but you need to keep them on a leash at all times.

Wildlife Viewing

Muddy Mountain EEA is an excellent spot for watching wildlife in Wyoming. The forested part and the sagebrush and grassland vegetation in the area provide a favorable habitat for different wild animals, including elk, antelopes, deer, fox, and blue grouse. Remember to pack your pair of binoculars to help you see different bird species that reside in the BLM land.

Picnicking

If you enjoy picnicking, you can find some beautiful spots within the Muddy Mountain EEA for an enjoyable picnic. Both Lodgehole and Rim Campgrounds have peaceful and private settings where travelers can enjoy a meal with family and friends. These organized campsites provide picnic benches and fire rings, allowing you to have a wonderful evening in the outdoors after hiking throughout the day.

Horseback Riding

Pack animals, including horses, are permitted within the BLM site, allowing you to explore the Muddy Mountain EEA while riding on horseback. Riding opportunities are usually available within the trail system in the natural area.

Bureau of Land Management Camping

RV Camping

RV camping enthusiasts can find a place to park their RVs thanks to the developed sites in the Muddy Mountain EEA. Visitors can camp at Lodgepole Campground or Rim Campground within the developed area. These Bureau of Land Management campgrounds provide a total of 23 camping sites, including several pull-through sites for big trailers and RVs. Both campgrounds offer level tent pads, fire pits, and trash receptacles. Potable water is also available near Lodgepole Campground's entrance. Visitors can find vault toilets at Interpretive Nature Trailhead and each Bureau of Land Management camping ground.

Free Camping

Dispersed camping is permitted within the Muddy Mountain EEA. However, primitive campers can only camp at the designated areas within the general recreation area. Camping is only available on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to a two-week stay. There are no hookups or RV size limits on this Bureau of Land Management free camping area.

Planning your Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area BLM trip

A BLM RV trip lets you explore, enjoy, and make unforgettable memories from your camping experience on public lands. Before leaving for your trip, check the area's current weather and road conditions from the BLM website. This way, you'll be prepared for any detours, road closures, or rough weather as you head out. Access during the winter season is limited to snowmobiles through the marked snowmobile trails. There's no full-size vehicle access available during the spring and winter seasons.

Muddy Mountain EEA has some developed campgrounds where RV enthusiasts can camp and access basic amenities during their visits. You can park your recreational vehicle in either Lodgepole Campground or Rim Campground. If you are exploring the BLM site on foot, two pedestrian gates are situated along the area's western boundary. You'll also find a parking area on the boundary's northwest corner east of the Rim campground. To avoid getting lost during your trip, carry navigation equipment such as GPS units and detailed maps with you. Leave No Trace

During your trip to Muddy Mountain EEA, remember to keep a safe distance when watching wild animals for your safety. You should not discharge weapons anywhere in the developed area, and campfires are restricted to the provided fire pits. Do not cut live trees to make a fire. Instead, use dry wood that is lying around or carry in your firewood. Also, avoid interfering with the area's rocks, natural vegetation, and archeological objects to enable other nature lovers to enjoy these items of interest after you. Lastly, consider others exploring the area by avoiding unnecessary noises, uncontrolled pets, and damaged surroundings.

To reach Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area, you need to travel south about 9 miles on Wyoming Hwy 251 to Casper Mountain top, where the state road ends and continues as Country Rd 505. Drive for around 3 miles until the end of the pavement, and continue for another 2 miles to the junction with Natrona County Road 505 (Circle Drive). Continue straight, and follow the BLM gravel road for approximately 4.5 miles to reach the Muddy Mountain EEA.
