Green Mountain

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Green Mountain, a BLM herd management area, is an alpine region located near Jeffrey City, Wyoming, not too far from Rawlins in the southern-central part of the state. The area is about seven hours from Yellowstone National Park and is surrounded by several national forests and wilderness areas. It’s also the only developed recreation facility in an area of several hundred square miles. In addition to viewing the wild horses and other wildlife, visitors to Green Mountain HMA can also enjoy the nearby peaks of Whiskey Peak and Crooks Mountain as well as the Cottonwood Campground. The area is a favorite of hunters, wildlife watchers, hikers, and, thanks to the gorgeous views, photographers.

Bureau of Land Management sites are generally areas of public lands that are protected and preserved to save the wildlife and natural beauty of the space while educating and offering recreational activity options to visitors. Planning your Green Mountain BLM trip

Green Mountain is closed from December 1 to June 15, so make sure to schedule your trip around these dates if you want to enjoy the mountain and the surrounding area. The mountain is also relatively remote, so pack plenty of supplies, including snacks, water, and first aid supplies, just in case. You may also want to check the conditions of the roads around Green Mountain before heading out, as rain or snowmelt can sometimes make the roads rough.

During the early fall, late spring, and summer months when the area is open, temperatures are usually in the 70s and 80s, and rain is infrequent. However, if you’re planning to enjoy the area during October or November, remember that snowstorms can happen quickly and without much warning, and these storms can prove to be very dangerous. Always check the forecast before you head out, and unless you and your vehicle are prepared for snow, avoid the area if snow is predicted.

Leave No Trace Leaf

At any Bureau of Land Management campgrounds, trails, or other natural areas, it’s important to limit your impact on the environment. You can do this by practicing the "Leave No Trace" policies, such as always picking up your litter and disposing of it properly. Throwing away all trash includes properly disposing of food waste instead of leaving these items, like apple cores, along the trail or at a campsite. It’s also crucial that you share these natural areas with other visitors by leaving space and keeping your noise, such as music or barking dogs, to a minimum.
