The Narrows, Zion National Park
Another intriguing hiking route in Zion National Park, The Narrows takes you along the Virgin River and offers a unique adventure for the well-prepared hiker. This trail also lies roughly 49 miles to the west of Ponderosa Grove.

Intensity: Moderate to strenuous, depending on water levels and distance traveled
Fishing and Boating
The Ponderosa Grove Campground's proximity to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes opens up ample opportunities for fishing and boating enthusiasts. About 22 miles west lies the Jackson Reservoir, a favorite spot among anglers. The reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout and largemouth bass. Boating is also allowed here although there are restrictions on motor sizes. Further afield, about 35 miles to the west, is the expansive Lake Powell. The lake harbors numerous fish species, including bass, catfish, and crappie. With miles of shoreline and deep, clear water, it's an excellent location for both fishing and various boating activities. So, whether you're looking to cast a line or set sail, you'll find the waters around Ponderosa Grove Campground just perfect.
Climbing
The terrain near Ponderosa Grove Campground provides ample opportunities for those with a taste for heights and a love for climbing. To the north lies the Canaan Mountain Wilderness, under 50 miles from the campground. The wilderness is renowned for its sandstone cliffs, some rising more than 2,000 feet above the surrounding landscape. Climbers can find a variety of routes of varying difficulties here. However, some of these climbs are quite challenging and should only be attempted by advanced climbers.
Wildlife Viewing
The vicinity of Ponderosa Grove Campground is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. A brief venture into Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park might yield sightings of the endemic Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle or the Utah prairie dog. If bird watching piques your interest, a short journey northwest to Pipe Spring National Monument opens a world teeming with diverse bird species, including the western tanager and the black-chinned sparrow.
Picnicking
Under the shade of Ponderosa Pines, the campground offers ample opportunities for serene picnicking. The designated picnic area is equipped with picnic tables and fire pits so you can enjoy your meal while relishing the quiet beauty of the surroundings. For an alternative picnic setting, consider a short trip to Jackson Flat Reservoir, where the water's edge provides a picturesque backdrop.
