Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Approximately 10% of all U.S. land is the responsibility of the Bureau of Land Management, which answers to the Department of the Interior. Also known as BLM, this organization handles national resources and public lands with several goals in mind. These goals include maintaining public lands as they currently are, preserving them for future generations, and allowing for versatile use. Many people take advantage of developed or primitive BLM campgrounds. Some sites require nominal fees or reservations, but others might offer Bureau of Land Management free camping. You can find suitable options by searching "BLM camping near me." Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon is also known to many simply as Red Canyon. As you hike through this canyon, you can admire the breathtaking view of logs balanced over you between the two canyon walls. You will also discover the ancient Moqui Steps. Also known as Moki Steps, these common features in areas once inhabited by Pueblo Native Americans and associated cultures. These steps usually alternate between toe and hand holds carved into vertical sandstone surfaces. If you decide to take your RV through this part of Utah, then be sure you also visit Bryce Canyon National Park to the north or Zion National Park to the west.

Planning your Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon BLM trip

While the scenery here is stunning, the local terrain can be surprising in ways you might not expect. The paths here involve a lot of deep sand that is difficult to traverse. Sometimes, it is not even passable. Flash floods in the last few years have been strong enough to push boulders into the Red Canyon. This results in drop-offs that visitors and novice hikers cannot safely surmount. Furthermore, the difficulty and height of these obstacles are constantly changing as more floods transfer debris and sediment from one area to another. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center, located in Kanab, offers maps and has current details regarding the conditions in Peek-A-Boo Canyon. If you attempt a hike during your visit, try to travel in a group for safety. Carry enough water and food, and pack a first-aid kit and layers of clothes to deal with the arid environment. Don't forget your sunglasses and sunscreen! It's easy to look at pictures of the canyon and think you will be in the shade, but most of your hiking will be outside the canyon and in direct sunlight.
