Kelly Canyon Trail

This trail is great for both hiking and mountain biking. Many enjoy this trail due to its solitude and lack of popularity. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Length: 3.7 miles Intensity: Moderate

Cress Creek Nature Trail

Cress Creek Nature Trail follows the Snake River through forestry, slopes, and creeks. This trail is not commonly used for mountain biking but is great for hiking and trail running. Length: 1.3 miles Intensity: Beginner

Palisades Creek Trail

This trail boasts jaw-dropping scenery of both the Upper and Lower Palisades Lakes. This is a long, out-and-back trail that is great for backpacking and hiking. Leashed dogs are welcome at Palisades Creek. Length: 9.9 miles Intensity: Challenging

Kelly Island Campground sits along the south end of the Snake River, lending great opportunities for trout fishing. The Byington Boat Ramp is just across the river from Kelly Island Campground. Many visitors love kayaking and canoeing down the Snake River from this launch point.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

The Snake River Range foothills are exceptional for wildlife viewing. Throughout the trails and surrounding area, you may see bighorn sheep, wildcats, and herds of caribou. Keep a safe distance from other native animals, including grizzly bears, wolverines, and prairie rattlesnakes. Be sure to bring your camera to capture pictures of wildlife in their natural habitat.

Picnicking

Kelly Island Campground is equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. There is a water faucet available, as well. Visitors should be courteous of others in the area when picnicking and ensure they clean up when they are finished.

OHV Riding

While OHV riding is prohibited within the campground itself, there are numerous spots for nearby OHV riding. One common spot nearby is Wolf Flats Recreation Area, located just 15 minutes from the campground. OHV riders can explore the nearby mountain ranges and river paths on OHV trails.

BLM RV Camping is possible at Kelly Island Campground. The campground has four large RV sites available at a cost of $35 per night. These sites can be reserved by calling the Upper Snake BLM office. For RV camping at a nearby RV park, Heise RV Park is one popular spot. This RV campground is open seasonally from April through October and offers sites with full hookups.

Those traveling to Kelly Island Campground can enjoy dispersed camping on BLM land for free. Bureau of Land Management free camping is available throughout its public lands. However, this is intended for basic or "primitive" RV camping. Many visitors choose to try dispersed or primitive camping along the Snake River or within the Kelly Mountain Range.

Take a left on 160E and follow for an additional six miles across the Heise Bridge. Continue down 160E until Heise Rd, then take a right.
