BLM Camping

Blackrock Canyon Recreation Site

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Many of the most popular camping and recreation destinations in the western United States are under the protection of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM, a federal government agency, is responsible for maintaining more than 850 separate public sites across the country. In total, the land they administer covers more than 247 million acres. These BLM sites vary greatly in their geographical features, ecosystems, and the type of activities they're used for.

One of these BLM-protected areas is Blackrock Canyon Recreation Site in southeastern Idaho. Found in the same area as the Chinese Peak-Blackrock Trail System, the recreation site is frequently utilized for camping, mountain biking, hiking, off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding, and horseback riding. If you're looking for BLM camping, check the BLM website or search online at "BLM camping near me" to see which sites are in your area.

BLM RV camping is possible around the Blackrock Canyon Recreation Site. However, you won't have any hookups or services available unless you travel to an off-site campground. Although there aren't any nearby Bureau of Land Management campgrounds, the Pocatello area does boast numerous RV camping options. Some popular options include Pocatello KOA Journey and Batise Springs RV Park.

As long as you stay off of the actual trails, you'll have lots of choices for Bureau of Land Management free camping around the site. Much of the surrounding area is rocky and mountainous, so it may take some searching to find a suitable camping spot. If you head south along the Portneuf River, you should come across many open areas and clearings. Some of these spots should provide peaceful, comfortable settings for a quiet campsite.
