Ledges Cottonwood Area
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.
Located outside of Naturita, Colorado not far from the Uncompahgre National Forest, the Ledges Cottonwood Area is in a grove of cottonwoods that grow along the San Miguel River. The area is also home to a campground and a nearby hand-carry boat ramp. This BLM site is only about 98 miles from Arches National Park, so if you have the time, you should stop by.
Like all BLM sites, the Ledges Cottonwood Area is a section of public land that a federal agency protects to help preserve its natural state. BLM locations are set aside to protect habitats and wildlife while allowing visitors to connect with nature and have fun outdoors.
What to See and Do
Hiking and Biking
Buck Trail
Located in the Uncompahgre National Forest, this trail is excellent for hiking and mountain biking. People also enjoy snowshoeing on this trail in winter.

Uncompahgre Riverwalk
This trail in nearby Ridgway State Park is a local favorite for hiking. In winter, you can enjoy excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities there.

Karni Mata Loop
This trail offers amazing views and is a great place to spot wildlife while hiking.

Paradox Trail
A short section of a much longer trail, the Paradox Trail passes through Nucla, Colorado and offers a beautiful hike.
Length: 3.5 miles

Fortyseven Trail
Another trail in the Uncompahgre National Forest, this trail has some steep sections, but it offers incredible views.
Length: 8.3 miles

Fishing and Boating
Crawford State Park is one of the best nearby locations for fishing. The lake is an excellent place to catch catfish, perch, crappie, pike, trout, and bass. During the winter, ice fishing is popular. There is also a beach and swimming area, and boating is popular. Sweitzer Lake is another ideal spot for fishing, and common catches include catfish, carp, sunfish, and bluegill.
Climbing
One of the best local spots for rock climbing is Red Rocks, located near the Atomic Energy Crag outside of Naturita. These sandstone walls offer 20 traditional and sport climbs. The Big Gypsum Valley also offers 35 traditional, sport, and bouldering routes of varying difficulties.
Wildlife Viewing
Wildlife can often be seen right at the Ledges Cottonwood Area, but visitors can head to the Uncompahgre National Forest for even more wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Animals native to these areas include owls, lynx, elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, moose, and peregrine falcons. You might also spot grouse, black bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, and pine martens.
Picnicking
Crawford State Park offers a large group picnic area, and you'll find several smaller picnic areas with tables and fire rings throughout the park. Ridgway State Park also has 87 picnic areas scattered throughout the park. Several sites are accessible, and many have restrooms, drinking fountains, and shade shelters.

RV Camping 
BLM RV camping is on offer right at the Ledges Cottonwood Area. The campground has 14 campsites. Cabanas, grills, picnic tables, and toilets are available, but drinking water is not. Camping fees run from $5 to $20. Crawford State Park is another excellent RV camping option. It has 60 campsites, and hookups are available. Free Camping 
If you're looking for Bureau of Land Management free camping, check out Alta Lakes Campground. You can set up a dispersed site on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ledges Rockhouse Campground is another excellent option for dispersed camping, with on-site picnic tables and fire rings.

Planning your Ledges Cottonwood Area BLM trip
The Ledges Cottonwood Area and Cottonwood Campground site is located along the San Miguel River. The section of the river near the campground moves fast, and several large holes in the river's bedrock create rapids. These rapids can be dangerous, particularly when the water is high, such as after the spring snowmelt. Always watch kids and pets closely when they're near the river's edge.
Most people choose to explore the Ledges Cottonwood Area during the late spring, early fall, and summer when the weather is warmest. During the winter, temperatures often drop below freezing. However, the area receives a fair amount of snow each year, making it a great spot for activities like snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing. Leave No Trace 
When camping in Bureau of Land Management campgrounds, stay in areas that are specifically for camping or ones that look like they've been used before. Pack out everything you bring with you, like trash and food waste. Do not bring home any plants, rocks, or animals, and always secure your food so wild animals can't reach it.
Ledges Cottonwood Area Location
From Naturita, take CO 141 east for about two miles to CR 90. Head north on CR 90 for 1.1 miles toward the power plant. At the power plant, keep right on CR 90 and head toward Montrose. Continue for another 6.8 miles, crossing the bridge of the San Miguel River. After the bridge, take an immediate hard right onto an unmarked road running parallel to the river. The Cottonwood Area and Campground site is roughly two miles from the bridge.
