This is an out-and-back trail that leads to Deadman Peak. This trail is excellent for hiking and it will take an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete.

Fishing and Boating

At the Gila River and the San Francisco River, you can do some good trout fishing. The best time to visit this place is from April to October. You will need an Arizona fishing license to fish in these waters. Rafting, canoeing, and kayaking are some activities you can engage in at the Gila River. You can swim in certain parts of the river like the creeks and the lake.

Climbing

Mount Graham

Mount Graham is an excellent place to go rock climbing. This mountain is located in the Pinaleno Mountains and has an elevation of over 10700 feet. There are many different routes that you can take to the top of the mountain. They include the West Fork Trail, the East Fork Trail, and the Italian Springs Trail. The best time to climb Mount Graham is from April to October.

Deadman Peak

This peak is another good place to go rock climbing. It is located in the Rincon Mountains and has an elevation of over 8000 feet.

Safford Peak

This 3500 ft peak also known as the Sombrero Peak, is located in the Tucson Mountains. It offers stunning views of the city of Tucson and the surrounding area. There are several different routes that you can take to the top of the peak. It is considered a moderate to challenging hike. The best time to hike Safford Peak is from October to April.

Wildlife Viewing

The Safford-Morenci Trail is an excellent place to appreciate the variety of wildlife as you do your hiking. You can see various animals in the area like deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and javelina. The bear and mountain lion are also what you might encounter through this trail. The best time to see these animals is in the early morning or the late evening. There are many different picnicking areas in the Safford-Morenci area. One of the most popular picnic spots is at the Gila River. Here you can enjoy a scenic view of the river while taking lunch. Grills and tables are available at the picnic area.

RV Camping

BLM RV camping on Safford-Morenci Trail is possible. The Safford RV Resort is situated at the beginning of the trail. At the trail's end, you can find the North Clifton RV Park. Arcadia Campground is one of the Bureau of Land Management campgrounds located south of the trailhead. Dump stations are available at all three of these campgrounds. BLM RV camping is also possible in Frye Canyon. The Frye Canyon is located outside the canyon and offers full hookups. Dump stations are available at this campground as well.

Free Camping

Dispersed camping is allowed on the Safford-Morenci Trail. Camping is not allowed within one mile of any developed recreation site or trailhead. Camping is also not allowed within 100 feet of any water source. When dispersed camping, it is vital to practice Leave No Trace principles.
