Mount Trumbull Trail

This out-and-back trail takes you to a summit and offers bird-watching opportunities along the way. The forested area mostly consists of juniper, oak and ponderosa pine. March through November is the best time for visiting the area.

Grand Canyon via Whitmore Canyon Trail

You can view hexagonal basalt formations when you hike this out-and-back trail. It's beautiful any time of the year.

Nampaweap Petroglyph Trail

Nampaweap Petroglyph Trail meanders through a canyon and has a series of petroglyphs you can admire. At the trailhead, you can read about the petroglyphs before beginning your hike.

In addition to Mount Trumbull, you could climb Mount Logan and Hells Hole. Mount Logan is 7,886 feet with beautiful views of the surrounding wilderness. There are also vantage points on the way up to the peak, where you have views of Whitmore Canyon. Hells Hole is a natural amphitheater that features colorful rock formations and rugged terrain. It's a steep climb.

Common wildlife spottings in Mount Trumbull Wilderness Area include jackrabbits, Kaibab squirrels, mule deer, porcupines and coyotes. If you're lucky, you may spot a mountain lion or pronghorn antelope. Bird species that live in the wilderness area include Steller's Jays, red crossbills, and common ravens. There are additional wildlife viewing opportunities in Mount Logan Wilderness as well. You could see raptors, wild turkeys, spotted skunks, bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, mule deer, and porcupines.

Picnicking

A good picnicking area near Mount Trumbull Wilderness Area is Tuweep Campground. Located at the northern rim of the Grand Canyon, the campground offers a beautiful view. There are picnic tables and compost toilets available but no water supply.

Horseback RidingHorseback Riding

You can go on a guided ride through the north rim or south rim of Grand Canyon. Horseback riding is also allowed in Mount Trumbull Wilderness Area and Mount Logan Wilderness.

Scenic Drive

Mount Trumbull Scenic Loop Drive delivers views of volcanoes, ancient relics, and the Grand Canyon. It requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The high plateaus in Parashant National Monument are perfect places to gaze at the night sky. These areas are usually free of clouds and have high air quality that allow for the night sky's beauty to shine.

Tuweep Campground, Mohave County Park Hualapai Mount Park, and Wild Cow Springs Campground are some of the nearby campgrounds that offer RV camping. The RV length limit is 22 feet for Tuweep Campground, and neither charcoal grills nor fires are allowed. You can have fires at Mohave County Park Hualapai Mount Park and Wild Cow Springs Campground. Mohave County Park Hualapai Mount Park can also take large RVs. Electric hookups and water hookups are available at Mohave County Park Hualapai Mount Park as well.

Bureau of Land Management free camping is possible at Mount Trumbull Loop Dispersed, Mount Trumbull Wilderness Area, and Cedar Pockets Pass Dispersed Camping. Pets and fires are allowed in these areas. You may also bring horses to Mount Trumbull Loop Dispersed.

Planning your Mount Trumbull Wilderness Area BLM trip

Use of vehicles and any type of motorized equipment or even bicycles isn't allowed in the wilderness areas. You'll need a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle to access some of the sites in the region. If you plan on visiting Mount Trumbull Wilderness, you should make sure that it shows on the map you use; because of how remote it is, it doesn't show on some maps. Come prepared with the emergency supplies you would need while camping and hiking in a wilderness area. Although Mount Trumbull is no longer an active volcano, there are still some lava flows. You should maintain a safe distance from lava because its radiant heat can burn you.

Leave No Trace rules are important to follow to protect the land, yourself, and other visitors. You should dispose of human waste correctly and avoid altering the land as much as possible. In dispersed BLM RV camping areas, you should set up your campsite on areas that have already been used for camping. Don't carve on any trees or logs. You should also avoid bringing items you find back home, even if they are just rocks or plants.

Mount Trumbull Wilderness is located in Mohave County, Arizona. From Fredonia, Arizona, travel west on AZ-389W/Pratt Street toward S First W Street. After about 8.3 miles, you need to take Mount Trumbull Road until you reach your destination. The road is about 47 miles.
