Located on the western edge of Pennsylvania, Moraine State Park offers countless activities within its 16,725 acres. The park’s unique terrain can be traced back to the Ice Age where at least four glaciers reached an area just north of the park. These glaciers, more than a mile thick, left behind large swaths of debris, which is called a moraine. This change in landscape helped lead to the formation of dense forests, new lakes and mineral deposits that would be mined at a later date in the 1800s, bringing in an economic boom for the area.

What to Do at
Moraine State Park
Moraine State Park is one of the largest parks in the state of Pennsylvania and offers plenty of fun activities. The 3,225-acre Lake Arthur is the main focal point of the park and offers many watersport activities. Visitors can rent a pontoon boat, kayak or canoe to gain access to the lake, or bring your own boat and use one of the several boat launches to put yours in the water. If you are looking to do something more strenuous, you will find a mountain bike trail, hiking trails and 18-hole disc golf course.
Fishing
Lake Arthur is home to several species of fish, including northern pike, largemouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie and bluegill. Fishing is prohibited from boat docks and within 100 feet of launching or mooring areas. A fishing license is required for all anglers aged 16 and older.
Geocaching
Geocaching is available in the park. If you would like to leave a cache, you must obtain permission from the park office. GPS units are available to be checked out with a valid ID.
Nature Watching
Moraine State Park includes numerous water sources, which provide natural resources to a variety of wildlife. Great blue herons, green herons and ospreys can be seen near Lake Arthur. A waterfowl observation deck is located along Park Road.
Hiking
The park is home to 29 miles of hiking trails. These trails travel through forests, grassy areas and along the lakeshore. Hikers will find trails ranging from easy with a low grade and few obstacles to advanced difficulty with a steep grade.
Boating
Lake Arthur offers nine public boat launches. The maximum horsepower motor allowed on the lake is 20hp. Motorboats, kayaks, canoes and rowboats are available for rent. Sailing is also a popular form of boating on Lake Arthur. Visitors can enjoy races, and regattas or take an instructional class.
Swimming
There are two designated swimming areas on Lake Arthurs. Lakeview Beach features a 656-foot sand beach on the north side of the lake while Pleasant Valley Beach is on the south side of the lake and includes a 400-foot turf and sand beach.
Biking
Mountain bikers will find a six-mile loop trail on the north side of the park. The trail, which contains steep slopes and rough surfaces, is intended for experienced riders in good physical condition. Traditional bikes are allowed on state park roads and trails designated for biking. However, you must be mindful of any trails that are designated hiking-only.
How to Get to
Moraine State Park
Moraine State Park is located at 225 Pleasant Valley Rd, Portersville, PA 16051. If you are traveling to the park from Pittsburgh, PA, you will need to take I-279 north until you reach I-79 N. Merge onto I-79 N and continue on this road for 24.4 miles until you come to exit 96. Take exit 96 for PA-488 toward Portersville/Prospect. Turn right onto PA-488 and take this road for just over one mile until you reach Pleasant Valley Rd. Turn left onto Pleasant Valley Rd and continue along for another mile until you see the park entrance on your left.
Entering Moraine State Park
The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The park office is also open year-round, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as on the weekends. There are no entry fees to get into the park. However, if you are looking to launch a boat, you will need to obtain a permit from the Davis Hollow Marina office.
