Found in the town of Northwood in New Hampshire is Northwood Meadows State Park. The land that the park sits on today was purchased by the state in 1990, and prior to that, M. Edward Burtt built the area’s roads and a brook created with a dam. The pond at the park is now named Burtt Wildlife Pond in his honor. This state park encompasses 675 acres of land and water, and it borders the Forest Peters Wildlife Management Area. The geographical features of the park include vast wetlands, forests, and small boulders. Multiple scenic vista points can be found along the trails of the park offering excellent views overlooking Meadow Lake.

Barrington Shores Campground
Barrington Shores Campground is on the 350-acre Swains Lake, positioned among the beautiful tall pines and fresh air of southern New Hampshire. RVs of all sizes are welcome here. There are two beaches and a boat ramp where visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and other water activities.

What to Do at
Northwood Meadows State Park
During the winter, Northwood Meadows State Park becomes a haven for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, and snow-based activities are permitted on all of the park’s multi-use hiking trails. During all seasons, visitors can enjoy scenic views of the park’s forests, lake, creeks, and ponds, which all make for excellent photographing opportunities, especially when the area’s deer are present. Horseback riding is also permitted on designated trails, including part of the NALMC Trail.
Outdoor activities are abundant at this state park, and facilities of the park include a vault toilet and picnic sites. While day use of this park is free year-round, there are no park staff present at the park, so be sure to plan your trip before you arrive.
Inside Northwood Meadows State Park
Northwood Meadows State Park is a popular place for fishing and non-motorized boating. The easily accessible trails are ideal for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park offers a picnic area where you can enjoy a meal and the splendor of nature. In winter, many visitors enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Other activities to enjoy inside the state park are bird-watching, wildlife observation, and relaxing.
Fishing
Northwood Meadows State Park has two ponds stocked with fish, including Burtt Wildlife Pond and Demon Pond. There are also multiple creeks, including Tucker Brook, which is dammed for easy fishing year-round. Meadow Lake can be found at the park, too, and this lake is known for great rainbow trout fishing. All anglers who come to this park are required to have a valid fishing license issued by the state of New Hampshire and to follow any local fishing regulations.
Flora and Fauna
Plenty of New Hampshire’s native wildlife can be found at Northwood Meadows State Park, including deer, moose, black bear, and otters. As for flora, this park may have native plants ranging from bee balm and lupines to black-eyed Susans and wild columbine.
Hiking
Hiking is perhaps the most popular activity at Northwood Meadows State Park, and over 10 miles of trails are available to use. Many of the park's trails are also wheelchair accessible, and some trails are marked for multi-use, making them open for hiking as well as skiing or snowshoeing. Some trails include the 1.8-mile Saddleback/Parsonage Loop, 1.2-mile Lake Trail, 0.3-mile White Trail, and the Universal Access Trail, which connects to other longer trails in the park.
Boating
Non-motorized boating is permitted at this state park, specifically on Meadow Lake. While there are no boat ramps on the lake, you can put canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats in the water easily from the shoreline.
Biking
Bikers are welcome to use any of the hiking trails found at this state park aside from the Harmony Hill Farm section of the NALMC Trail. Biking is especially popular on the Old Mountain Road and Dashingdown Road sections of the NALMC Trail.
How to Get to
Northwood Meadows State Park
Northwood Meadows State Park can be found just off of US-4 or US-202. To reach this state park from Boston, begin by traveling north on I-95 toward Peabody for approximately eight miles. Keep right on I-95 North, then continue 32 more miles. After entering New Hampshire, keep left, and continue until you can take exit 4 for US-4/NH-16 towards the White Mountains. From there, merge onto US-4 West and continue until you reach a traffic circle. At the circle, take the second exit and travel nine more miles before taking the second exit again at the next circle. Continue 11 miles, and the entrance to the state park will be on the left.
Entering Northwood Meadows State Park
There is no fee to enter this park, and parking can be found near the information kiosk at the gate.
