Located in southern Mississippi, Paul B Johnson State Park is just 20 minutes south of Hattiesburg and west of Purvis. Camp Shelby is also a nearby city, giving RV vacationers another place to explore. The park is a beautiful scenic lakeside retreat oasis with a natural wonderland marked by majestic long-leaf and loblolly pines, ancient oaks, and delicate dogwoods that fits perfectly into an RV vacation. The deep De Soto National forest surrounding the park provides a picturesque setting for various outdoor activities. Many wildlife species roam the forest area like white-tailed deer, bobcats, coyotes, and foxes. Although in the park, you'll only see the animals that live there like squirrels, rabbits, and various bird species.

Inside Paul B Johnson State Park

Inside, the state park is relatively small, with most of the day-facilities being along the western shore of Geiger Lake, a short distance from the campground. Many vacationers utilize the 225-acre lake for fishing, boating, and other water sport activities. There is a sand beach and swimming area right behind the visitor center where you can relax and soak up the sun's rays. Those who are outdoor enthusiasts will love walking on the Trail of Southern Pines that will take them through Mississippi plant, bird, and animal life. Other activities here are a playground, picnic area, splash pad, and game room.

Outside of Paul B Johnson State Park, you'll find a diverse number of opportunities to see and to do. The nearby town of Hattiesburg offers various restaurants and shops to visit. Hattiesburg Zoo

Hattiesburg Zoo opened its gates for the first time in 1950. It has grown since then, now housing over 75 different animal species. You'll be able to see exotic animals like alligators, zebras, tigers, and various bird species. There is no charge to park at the zoo, but a small entrance fee is required to enter the front gates; children under age two are free.

Updown Trampoline Park

Updown Trampoline Park features more than 45,000 square feet of trampoline, a giant foam pit, and a ninja warrior course. There are multiple party rooms where you can have birthday parties or group gatherings. An arcade, trapeze, and various sporting courts are a few more things to do here.

Big Creek Landing Recreation Area

Big Creek Landing Recreation Area, located on a high bank overlooking the scenic River and Black Creek Wild, is a small recreational place for picnicking, boat launching, and camping. The stream itself ranges from 20 to 100 feet wide and up to 15 feet deep, depending on the rainfall.

African American Military History Museum

Learn about African Americans who served in the United States military and their sacrifices for our country. At the African American Military History Museum, you'll learn the history behind the USO Club that had opened in 1942, in the segregated army of World War II. Visitors will not need to pay an admission fee to enter the museum.

How to Get to
Paul B Johnson State Park

If you're traveling from Hattiesburg, you'll want to begin by heading southwest on East Pine Street toward Main Street. Turn left onto West Pine Street, drive for about a mile, and turn left onto US Highway 49 South. Continue for 11.4 miles, and then turn right onto Tower Road. Go just under two miles, make a left onto Geiger Lake Road, and then follow signs to the state park.
