Located in the magnificent lowland redwoods of southern Humboldt County, Richardson Grove State Park is 7 miles south of Garberville and less than 9 miles south of Leggett. The Grove has 2,000 acres of beautiful redwoods bisected by U.S. Highway 101 and the South Fork of the Eel River. Here, you can view a variety of wildlife, including elk, wild turkey, eagles, deer, condors, bears, and more. The weather at Richardson Grove State Park often rains with morning and evening fog, but the temps are relatively mild year-round.

Richardson Grove State Park
Richardson Grove State Park is not just for campers; it's excellent for those who love the outdoors. Start at the visitors center where you can handle selected natural items. Then, take a one-half-mile hike on the Grove Nature Trail where you will be able to view wildlife habitats and a 346-foot-tall redwood that is at least 40 feet around.
Inside Richardson Grove State Park
Boating – During boating season, you can enjoy the open waters on the South Fork of the Eel River. People often take drift boats out on the river to enjoy the open water where it's just you and your boat.Fishing – The South Fork of the Eel River is an ideal place for fishing, especially during the fall and winter seasons. It is during these two seasons that the steelhead and spawning salmon return.Hiking – You can enjoy a stroll along the nature trails with 300-foot redwoods in view. In these redwoods, you will see native birds and wildlife, but be careful as bears have visited on occasion. If you want to hike longer with steeper hills, Franklin K. Lane Grove Hiking Trail is just over 17 miles away.Kayaking and canoeing – The Eel River is a prime area to go kayaking and canoeing. These waters are deep enough to row your oars through smoothly.Swimming – The Eel River is a popular area for swimming, especially on a hot summer's day. The river can be quite refreshing and relaxing after a long hike. You can sit or float for hours in the sun as you watch all the activities around you pass by.

Drive-Thru Tree Park
The Drive-Thru Tree Park is about 16 miles from Richardson Grove State Park. Since 1937, this privately owned park has been the home of the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree. Travelers come from all over to view the tree and take pictures of their vehicle underneath it. Another thing you can do here is hike, picnic, visit the gift shop, or just relax on one of the benches and take pleasure in the scenery.
One Log House
One Log House is a short 1 mile away from Richardson Grove State Park. It was crafted in 1946 from a 2,100-year-old redwood that took about eight months to hollow out. The place has a café and gift shop conveniently located near the grounds. Here, you can experience a nature walk among the redwood trees. On the walk, you will learn local history as well as information about edible and medicinal plants and the local wildlife.

You do not have to reserve a camping spot, but you may want to make one during the peak camping season, which is from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The cost is $35 per night.
