Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park RV & Campground Guide

California

Located near Earlimart, CA, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park pays tribute to 300-plus families who settled in the area in the early 1900s to escape Southern sharecropping. Visitors can learn more about the life of Colonel Allensworth, who rose to be the highest black officer in the United States before his retirement in 1906, as they wander through the nine historic buildings at this state park. You can also explore the way that the black residents farmed and governed themselves until the town eventually ran out of water when arsenic was found in the local wells. This park, which is about 30 miles north of Bakersfield, hosts several events throughout the year, including an Old Time Jubilee in May, a Juneteenth celebration, and a rededication celebration every October. You can visit the visitors' center to learn how these early settlers lived out the American Dream, take a guided cell phone tour, or go camping when you visit this park in the San Joaquin Valley.
