Adelanto is located in San Bernardino County, and its name means "advance" or "progress" in Spanish. It was founded in 1915 by E. H. Richardson, who invented the popular Hotpoint Electric Iron. Richardson bought the piece of land for $75,000, intending to build one of the master-designed communities in California. He later subdivided the land into 1-acre plots to erect a respiratory hospital and sell the rest to World War I veterans with respiratory conditions. Although Richardson didn't live to realize his big dream fully, he laid the foundation for the present Adelanto city with his plan. The city started with the opening of the Adelanto post office in 1917 and heavily depended on George Air Force Base as its main employer until 1992 when the base closed down. In 1970, the city of Adelanto was incorporated and it became a chartered city in November 1992.
