The area at the foot of Mt. Wrightson in southern Arizona has been inhabited for nearly 4,000 years. Today, the lush foothills around the mountains are home to the thoroughly modern town of Sahuarita, Arizona. The town is named after the ubiquitous Saguaro cacti that populate the area. The name roughly translates as "Little Saguaro."

Though the area has been a center of life and business for generations, the town was not incorporated until 1994. Native Americans farmed along the Santa Cruz River valley for thousands of years before the Spaniards arrived in the 1600s. The San Xavier del Bac Mission building was completed in about 1780.
