The early history of the area that would come to be called Henderson began potentially as much as 6,000 years ago. During this period, there were several Native American tribes calling the bayous home. During the 1700s, French trappers arrived to seek out new opportunities in the New World. Some of these trappers opted to settle, and the Village of Atchafalaya came into existence. Its name, which references its home basin, is the American Native term for “long river.”
The modern history of Henderson began in the 1930s as a result of a governmental order for larger levees in the Atchafalaya Basin. In fact, many of the town’s first settlers came from the neighboring Village of Atchafalaya. Since this time, Henderson has become synonymous with Cajun culture and remains a great place to sample Louisiana-style cuisine.
In fact, the town is near Breaux Bridge, which is known for its crawfish — a staple type of seafood in the diet of those living in the area. Henderson is actually the home of the Crawfish Festival, which happens annually in May.
Visitors to modern Henderson will be able to swim and fish in beautiful Lake Bigeaux, Henderson Lake, and Lake Pelba. Each of these lakes also offers swamp tours and is connected to the Atchafalaya River. While fishing here, you’ll have opportunities to catch white perch, bass, crappie, and bream. Henderson is also a prime bird-watching location; it’s easy to find hundreds of migratory and non-migratory bird species throughout the area.
